Ashes squad hopefuls.
Langer says the squad will be 15 or 16 players.
Harris and Labu on shaky ground - both with double failures in the second Test against Sri Lanka. Esp. as they've been at #1 & #4 which is where Warner and Smith will slip back in.
Burns, Khawaja and Head probably safe. Hard to fault Patterson's recent form.
Starc, Haz, Cummins and Lyon are shoe-ins. Jhye Richardson, Sids and maybe a swing bowler like Dan Worrall would be back-ups.
Although the present (v. SL) Test is the last before the Ashes, there are still good opportunities for players to influence selectors, in the long form of the game, with 4 Shield matches to come and the Australia A tour of the UK (although only one 3 day match. The others are One Dayers)
Possible 16.
Warner
Burns
Khawaja
Smith
Head
Patterson
Paine
Cummins
Lyon
Starc
Hazlewood
Richardson
Handscomb
Maxwell/Stoinis
Back-up spinner. Anyone's guess.
Siddle/Tremain

Yes mate. Just my first thoughts.
Re. back-up keeper. Of recent tours to the Old Dart, we haven't taken a reserve keeper. Mainly because there are few County matches, if any.
I'll check the schedule and report back. If Handscomb doesn't go, then Matt Wade comes into the picture.
A fair bit of cricket, including the ODI World Cup, is to come before the squad is named.

I don't think they will take a back up keeper as we will have around 12 extra players on the county set up waiting in case
We need players who know how to leave the ball around off stump
It will swing and seam for sure
Usman is a nicker as is Harris
Burns plays to much at and around off stump too but has runs on the board
Renshaw might be a smokey he's a good leaver of the ball
I don't know if Warner is a certainty I've heard he's very unpopular among several team mates due to his attitude but maybe he's going to be given a chance
Smith and Warner will need runs before being selected that's for sure
As far as the bowlers goes I doubt Siddle will earn a jersey
They will take Starc Hazzlewood Cummins and 2 like Worrall and Sayers who are known swingers of the ball as back up
We may go with a Stonis at 6 who can bowl some seam up stuff and is a decent bat

cricviz posted this on twitter:
"This graphic plots the attacking intent of Test batsmen against the quality of contact they make with the ball based on connection data. Players in the top right show high intent & make good contact. Tellingly no players have better contact quality than de Villiers or Kohli."
This is rather flattering to Handscomb...
Really they should say something about what the actual numbers mean, because this could potentially be very misleading.
e.g. What number is recorded if the ball hits the bat's sweetspot? For a thin edge? For a swing & miss?

No he can't be a overseas player at county level this season as he hasn't played a test matchDonny wrote:Comms are mentioning 17 players for the squad.
As qldmagpie67 mentioned, there will be Aussies playing in County Cricket, so it's possible for someone to be called into the squad, in the event of injury or form loss.
Will Pucovski, for instance.
New rules in county cricket there overseas player must have played a minimum of 1 test or 5 internationals in one dayers or 20/20
He doesn't qualify
But he can play minor counties as a pro in a league which is still good experience
I've heard he won't be going to far from home he's been having some issues that he's dealing with
He is a talent but emotionally very young
And another thing about the pic...
If we believe the horizontal measure, Rooty is really quite attacking, surpassed among semi-serious batsman by only Warner.
I'm not sure I would have guessed that.
I wonder whether any of those other blue dots is Mr. Stokes, whose attacking intent is presumably not entirely off-field.
(Should I comment on his off-field contact quality?)

Guys, Trent Copeland NEEDS to be selected for the English tracks.
What this summer has shown us is that most of our pace bowlers are hit/miss. Siddle not given any opportunity whatsoever, despite being our most disciplined line/length bowler.
Starc the main offender, Cummins and Hazlewood just as inept against India when the heat was really on in those crunch sessions that swung the momentum against us. Ball not pitched up outside off stump with any regularity to entice rash shots or restrict India's scoring.
Nobody read much into their bowling figures against Sri Lanka; who in all honesty would struggle to beat most of our Shield sides.
Don't be fooled into thinking this mob can makes inroads into England's top order with the utter lolly-pop crap they served up over the summer; we will get slaughtered.
There is often a smoky in every touring squad; we need to select Lloyd Pope plucked from obscurity, and hope to Christ he can perform circa 1993 Warne-like leg break miracles.
Otherwise the series will be done and dusted by the 2nd test, and Langer and the other nufty selectors will be left scratching their thick heads. Again.

In easy conditions, Patterson was rather elegant (David Gower-like??), but how is he against the moving ball?
Elsewhere, Baum picks this XI(I):
Warner, Marcus Harris, Smith, Travis Head, Patterson, Wade, Tim Paine, Pat Cummins, Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazlewood, Richardson, Starc (12th man).
https://www.smh.com.au/sport/cricket/cl ... 50vmw.html
I'm not sure how seriously I take Baum's opinions any more, after a series of very odd articles by him... but at least cricket is familiar ground for him, unlike baseball, and perhaps he can sort of maintain psychological balance on the Ashes makeup, unlike on the Pies GF Curse.
He says Starc "sometimes appears to be a victim of the Shaun Tait syndrome, whereby express pace is seen to be its own achievement, and who doesn't strike as an England sort of bowler anyway".

Meanwhile...
"For just as England's football team struggled to combine Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard in midfield, so the cricket team appear to be struggling to balance a side that has several players who would be best-placed at No. 6 (Stokes, Buttler, Bairstow and Moeen Ali) and more (Foakes, Curran and Woakes) who might be best at No. 7. Instead of dealing with this situation, instead of making some strong decisions, England have, at times, picked three keepers, asked Moeen to bat at every position from No. 1 to No. 9 and asked Buttler, Bairstow, Stokes and Moeen to bat too high in the order. As a result, their great strength - their middle-order depth - has been weakened."

Apparently cricviz (who made that pic above) was co-founded by Nathan Leamon, who is described as
"England's white-ball team analyst and head of research and innovation", so I guess the pic kind of tells us how England think...
Interview here:

(Late last year, he was touted as a possible successor to Strauss.
Has that position been decided yet? When will/did Strauss finish?)
