In the past AFL games were priced better than NRL - although its been a while since I've been to a NRL game.
Also AFL is a far better game to watch live than NRL - AFL tv coverage doesn't take in the wider view of the game enough, knowing what the players are kicking to and the work they do before the ball arrives is a big part of the game - directors miss this and also like to do quick cuts between cameras to heighten the excitement (as though it needs it) The beauty of watching NRL on the TV is that all the play is lined up with the camera - you see 90% of the players most of the time so why pay a premium to go to a game. If AFL ever entered the digital age and allow viewers to chose camera angles on the fly television will change.
All that said AFL will always be the greatest game on the planet

Soccer is gaining more and more participants. I read recently that some clubs have had to turn kids away as they're at maximum capacity.
You'd expect this would lead to an increased number of skilled players coming through, but whether this automatically leads to an increase in profile for the A league remains to be seen. The best kids will still head overseas where the money and profile is.

Just some other 2018 statistics that you want to look at....
Club membership
AFL = 1,008,494 >>> NRL = 328,244
TV rights deal
AFL 2.5 Billion for 6 years (416 million per year) > NRL 1.8 Billion for 5 years (360 million per year)
Average TV ratings are somewhat equal depending on which data you get your hands on.
Junior participation.
Mixed results depending on where you do your homework. But the general consensus is that in both NRL states, Rugby League is on the decline and AusKick is on a massive rise.
Soccer did have a steady incline across the country. But that is now being pegged back due to the growth of AFLW junior programs.
Grand final TV ratings.
AFL = 3.38 million >> NRL = 3.03 million
Dominant code in state (not including territories)
AFL 4 >> NRL 2
-With acknowledgement to Tassie that does not have a team in any code but are known to be AFL diehards.
Any thing else worth researching?
Total participants of all ages?
Growth?
Average wage per player?
Just to suggest a few.

As long as theres a city called Melbourne, Collingwood, Storm and Victory will all be in existence and life on the planet will flourish.
Its the NBL I'm worried about, but it is getting better.
RL is a just a bastardised version of Rugby Union, and has only been played in anger in this country since 1908.
RL supporters are ingnorant to the fact, Aussie rules has existed since the gold rush era in the 1850s. It rivals Soccer in world footballing terms, on history.
Liverpool are the same age as Collingwood.
We just didn't push Aussie Rules OS when he should have.

Different strokes for different folks.
I enjoy Rugby League (Go the Dogs), can't stand union and my only interest in soccer is Newcastle coz they're black 'n white Magpies, but I never watch it, I think there's more skill in netball and soccer is a joke on the world.

Who cares? Im not really an NRL fan. But I have no issue with those who follow it.
Nothing will ever match how I feel about Collingwood. But I still hope that Storm, Victory and Rebels do well.
And I'm happy for those who support other codes. Good luck to them. I'm not threatened by it and I dont see the point of arguing over it.
Collingwood and Aussie Rules football will be here as long as there's people living in Melbourne. Hopefully Dennis Rodman keeps Kim Jong-un and Donald Trump at peace.

How Popular Is Baseball, Really?
https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/201 ... eries.html
"But M.L.B. cashes in on its sheer volume of games, vastly outperforming the N.F.L. and the N.B.A in ticket sales every year. M.L.B. teams play at least 2,430 regular-season games each season, compared with only 256 regular-season games for the N.F.L. and 1,230 for the N.B.A. Even the 160 M.L.B.-affiliated minor league teams sold nearly 50 million tickets in 2017.
A lot of people are going to a lot of baseball games."
[The pic shows: MLB ticket sales (almost 75 million annually) & Minor League (almost 50 million) are way more than NBA and NFL (both under 25 million).]
"According to YouGov’s ratings of active sports personalities, 91 percent of Americans have heard of LeBron James and 88 percent have heard of Tom Brady, but only 43 percent have heard of Mike Trout of the Los Angeles Angels, baseball’s best player."
