Warner carried his bat again, last night, for Hyderabad, making another 70-odd not out. Punjab got over his team with a couple of balls to spare but, without him, Hyderabad's score wouldn't have been competitive. He now has a century and 3 50s from 6 innings and is the leading run-scorer in the IPL in 2019 by a considerable margin.

Of the Australians in the IPL, Warner has 349 runs at 87.25, Smith has 159 at 53, Lynn has 130 at 26, Watson has 88 at 17.6 and Stoinis has 74 at 74 (from 3 knocks, with a top score of 31*). The only player in the entire IPL who would get picked ahead of Warner on form would be Andre Russell - he has 207 runs at 103.5 and at the ridiculous strike rate of 269. I don't know how Russell will go on bigger grounds but if he playes anywhere that has short boundaries, he's the most damaging short-form batsman on the planet, at the moment.

Warne's XV:

"No more ODI’s for Aust til the World Cup. Remember the conditions in England will be nothing like the recent tours to India and the UAE. So a tough job for the selectors as players are going to miss out even though they have form. So my team would be....

Warner Short Finch Smith Maxwell Stoinis Carey Cummins Starc Richardson J (if fit) Zampa
Plus Marsh S N Lyon A Turner Coulter-Nile"

I cannot even begin to imagine how one could advocate selecting Marsh ahead of Khawaja on form. I'm not persuaded by Stoinis or Short, either - but at least that doesn't strike me as fundamentally misconceived.

Warne & Taylor think he's better in English conditions than Khawaja.

At least Khawaja can hit the straight balls. If he can't hit the straight ones, how is Marsh going to hit the bendy ones?

One of the replies to Warne quotes Smith's stats:

13 matches, 13 innings, 2 n.o., 330 runs at ave. 30, SR 75.34.

That's worse than even Head & Carey.

Stats since some date in 2017. (Not just his, all the leading scorers; Finch was top, I think.)

Warner is the first batsman to 400 runs in the IPL. He has 1 100 and 4 50s from 7 innings. He also has the top average (80). He was the only player to reach 50 in last night's game, even though his team was thrashed.

And in unofficial WC prep, Glenn Maxwell took 5 for 40 for Lancashire and "helped bowl Middlesex out for 200 on a wearing but by no means impossible pitch" (cricinfo).

"In Jason Behrendorff, Mumbai had an excellent left-arm fast bowler, known specifically for picking up early wickets. ... And at Wankhede, he was practically showing off, getting the new ball to move both ways. First, he had a close lbw shout against Parthiv Patel by moving the ball into the left-hander. Then he followed it up with another inswinger - this time to the right-handed Kohli.

It drew the batsman forward, tempting him to play the angle, then hit the deck and changed direction, conjuring a bat and pad gap - seems even Kohli suffers those - and secured the biggest wicket in world cricket."
