He did redeem himself... but cricinfo claims his drop cost Oz the match. Their claim is the life he gave Hardik cost Oz 28 runs:K wrote:5/238 (40).
... Carey had a terrible time behind the stumps in India's innings. He has the chance to redeem himself now.
"Australia's eventual defeat margin was 36 runs. When set against the drop that cost 28 runs, it shows up in stark relief how the result could have changed. Had Australia been chasing just over 320 instead of just over 350, they might well have got there."
Rain arrives. Let's hope it spices up the pitch. Modern batsmen are too pampered.
If rain reduces every game from here on to 20-20, WI could become tournament favourites.
Odds: WI 59%, S. Africa 41%.
Update: Hours have passed & it's still raining. They really should have had reserve days. cricinfo commentators insist that wasn't possible because of broadcast rights. That makes no sense, because even if the broadcaster can't cover it (and don't they all have second channels, anyway?) it would be extra cricket. How would declaring washout after washout help the broadcaster?
The weather forecast in Southampton looks bad:
Time Precip Humidity
3.15pm 55% 78%
4pm 50% 79%
5pm 45% 81%
6pm 50% 86%
7pm 50% 89%
8pm 50% 89%
2nd Update: Match abandoned.

"Fast bowler Nathan Coulter-Nile faces another nervous wait...
Coulter-Nile claimed his first wicket of the tournament in the 36-run loss to India on Sunday and rebounded well, having conceded 14 off his first over, finishing with 1-63. But the concern for the Australians is that if frontline quicks Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins do not strike with the new ball, or when they are brought back for short spells, the attack lacks conviction.
Paceman Marcus Stoinis (2-62 off seven overs), leg-spinner Adam Zampa (0-50 off six overs) and Glenn Maxwell (0-45 off seven overs) all failed to have a major impact...
Statistics also show Australia have had the worst fourth and fifth bowling options since the last World Cup in terms of leaking runs, while in this tournament Australia have conceded 70 overs of more than a run a ball - only Bangladesh have been worse."

Stoinis out...
... at least the next game, possibly the tournament. Side strain. M. Marsh flown in early as cover.
--------------------------------------------
In other news: It looks likely a second game in a row will be washed out.
Update: Yup. Abandoned without even a coin toss! This is a WC record!
V. Shetty via cricinfo tells us: "A match is called Abandoned if no toss happens - today will be the second instance in this World Cup, making it the highest number of abandoned games in a WC. A match that has had a toss and then doesn't get completed due to rain gets a No Result - there has only been one of those in this World Cup. The record is two, shared between '92 and '03."

Bangladesh upset by lack of reserve days at World Cup

Steve Rhodes:
"If you know the English weather, sadly, we're going to get a lot of rain. We never know when the rain's going to come. At the moment, we're seeing some problems.
"I know logistically, it would have been a big headache for the tournament organisers, and I know that it would have been difficult, but we have got quite a lot of time in between games, and if we have got to travel a day later, then so be it."
"We put men on the moon so why can't we have a reserve day, when actually this tournament is a long tournament?"
Dave Richards:
"Factoring in a reserve day for every match at the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup would significantly increase the length of the tournament and practically would be extremely complex to deliver.
"It would impact pitch preparation, team recovery and travel days, accommodation and venue availability, tournament staffing, volunteer and match official availability, broadcast logistics and very importantly the spectators who in some instances have travelled hours to be at the game.
"There is also no guarantee that the reserve day would be free from rain either."

Some rather harsh comments re. our loss to India. (not necessarily the above )
It was a serious flat track with conditions unhelpful for swing. Meant Starc & Cummins were blunted and C-Nile/Stoinis became cannon fodder. Zampa was uncharacteristically off and got not no help from the track.
Jasprit Bumrah was about the only bowler to do well. He's a freak and fully deserves his #1 ranking.
The Aussies were not far short, in the end, and with C-Nile/Cummins/Starc making little impression with the bat, the 20 odd run loss wasn't all that bad.
