Maxwell away immediately with a leg glanced boundary.

Nasser: "It's been a sloppy over." (For both sides.)

Odds 50-50.
Line: 300.5.

Smith drives for 4.

Nasser: "That's why Smith should be batting at 3."

Next ball, Smith hits another 4 180 degrees from the first 4.

----------------------

Next over, Maxwell hits Archer for 6, hoicked over cow corner.

And next ball, he tries again, but only gets 4, a little squarer.

Too short again?

That was 18 runs for Oz off 5 balls.

Maxwell out, caught behind. A big wicket.

Oz 4/213 (38.2).

The sight of Morgan happy fills your intrepid reporter with rage.

This is the time when Oz innings typically falter.

M. Taylor: "Australia could really do with a partnership." (There are still a lot of overs left. You don't want the bowlers to be out there for many.)
...

And then Stoinis is beaten...

Odds: England 53%, Oz 47%.
Line: 294.5.

Stoinis is struggling just to rotate the strike.

I can just copy & paste my previous comments about Oz's lower-order problems in the late overs.

Stoinis releases some of the pressure with a 4.

4/222 (41). The innings is stagnating.

Another mix-up and Stoinis & Smith are caught at the same end.
Stoinis is run out.

This Oz batting is a joke. But stand by for Langer to spew more rubbish about how great it is.

Oz 5/227 (41.5).

Watching the replay, I kind of wish Smith had given Rashid a rib-breaking hip and shoulder when he had the ball and was about to throw to the keeper for the run out. But then Smith would have been given out for obstruction of the field.

At 5/246 (43.3), the broadcast predictor says 290.

M. Clarke joins the chorus saying Smith should be batting at 3. Langer's stupidity and Khawaja's incompetence could cost Oz the WC.

Line after 44 overs: 294.5.

Clarke, in answer to Nasser (prompted by Carey, who was on the GWS list, being at the crease), says cricket is more lucrative than AFL.

For someone like him, maybe... but not for the rank and file. If you're the 30th best batsmen in the country, you're at Sheffield Shield level. A state contract is nowhere near what the 30th best midfielder would get in the AFL.

Smith holes out. The innings is crumbling. He's not suited to this. He should be at 3.

Oz 6/250 (45.4).

Will Oz be able to defend, say, 275?

M. Taylor repeats what Clarke and everyone else says: Smith should come in at 3. Khawaja is a waste of space.

Now, Oz are relying on Carey to repeat his batting heroics.

He hits the first ball of the 47th over for 4.

Clarke: "They'll end up 30 or 40 runs short of where they wanted to be after the partnership of Warner and Finch."

Cummins nicks off. Sadly, Buttler does not mess up this one. The keepers in this WC are collectively dragging down the art of wicket-keeping to new lows.

Oz 7/259 (47.1).

It's not his main job, of course, but Cummins hasn't looked like scoring runs this WC.

M. Taylor thinks the total might still be competitive.

Clarke says he's confused by what's happened to the Oz innings. But we've seen this over and over again in this WC, so it can hardly be a surprise.

Oz 7/263 (48 ).

Archer to bowl the 49th. Starts with a wide. Every run will help now.

Athers: "What a disappointing scorecard..."

Carey hits the second ball, which of course is the first legal one, for 4.
Dot. Dot (a ducked bouncer). Single. Single.
Carey hits the last ball for 4 behind Buttler.

Oz 7/274 (49).

Not Woakes, but Stokes, to bowl the 50th.

Dot. Carey dives back at the non-striker's end. Stokes does not throw.
Single. Carey is on strike now. Will he refuse singles?
Dot (slower bouncer -- should it have been called wide?).
Carey hits the 4th ball over cover for 4.
Carey mishits the 5th ball but scampers back for 2.
Carey makes room and cuts the last ball for 4.

Carey 38* (27).

Oz 7/285 (50).

Odds at change of innings: England 55%, Oz 45%.
