Awful first ball from Neesham! 4!

Second ball: Edge. Doesn't carry. But a dot ball.

Third ball: Swing and miss... Not a miss! NZ appeal and it's given caught behind. India review, as they should!

Yes, Ultra Edge shows a spike! Out.

India all out 221 (49.3). NZ win by 18 runs & go through to the final.

-------------------------------------------------------

A brilliant, committed effort from NZ with the ball and in the field.

They still have massive problems with the bat, with too much left to Williamson. It'd help them if Guptill can just find one big innings in him. The direct-hit run out of Dhoni will have given him the sense that he made a real contribution to his side today. And Neesham's left-handed catch was stunning.

' ''That was a perfect spell of fast bowling with the new ball,'' said Kohli...

''If conditions are good to bat, then they will have to bat really well,'' Kohli added. ''If conditions are bowler-friendly and they put enough runs on the board, they become a dangerous side as you saw in this game.''

After a semifinal that Boult said had the feel of a test because it was played out over two days, New Zealand's players can now put their feet up and take in Australia-England.'

England wait on pitch before naming bowling attack

' "Everybody is fit. It (selection) depends on the groundsman's final preparation this afternoon," Morgan told reporters. "He said he was going to take more grass off the wicket, but it looked good.

"If he takes more grass off, if it looks like it is going to turn ... we will lean towards the spinner. It looked as good as the game that we played India here. So if it is, we'll try and select accordingly." '

[Again, that pernicious word "good" to describe what is a terrible pitch, a flat-track bully's pitch.]

Selection intrigue in countdown to Australia's World Cup semi-final

https://www.theage.com.au/sport/cricket ... 526d0.html

"Selection intrigue has continued to mount in Edgbaston ahead of tonight's blockbuster semi-final between Australia and England, with overcast but dry weather in Birmingham on the morning of the match...

Glenn Maxwell could face the axe after a poor World Cup, although skipper Aaron Finch added to the drama by opting against confirming his selection or omission at his pre-match media conference.
...

Maxwell did not take part at Australia's optional training session on Wednesday but Finch warned against taking too much from that.
...

Marcus Stoinis has been declared fit but he didn't appear entirely comfortable while batting in the nets on Wednesday. Stoinis has battled left and right side strains through this tournament, hurting his right side in Saturday's loss to South Africa. Despite footage of the robust allrounder wincing in the nets, a Cricket Australia spokesman confirmed he was fit.

Showers have been forecast for tonight's match, but they are not expected to jeopardise the result."

"How will England cope with left-arm pace?

... England don't handle left-arm quicks too well. They average 22.8 this World Cup, a far cry from 38.3 against right-armers, and it's just part of a longer trend with them.

Starc and Behrendorff are certain to start again, but a couple of things have changed: the venue, for starters, is Edgbaston, which has traditionally produced a lot more runs than Lord's. And Jason Roy ... is back...

Will the Roy-Bairstow run-machine keep firing?

Teams have have had success targeting Roy and Jonny Bairstow's weaknesses early on at this World Cup - think Imran Tahir, Shadab Khan and Mehidy Hasan Miraz opening the bowling - but on an Edgbaston wicket with few demons, the duo hammered India's wristspinners when they erred in length...

... For example, while Roy's numbers indicate he has been exceptional against them, he has often been dismissed by both Starc and Pat Cummins, averaging less than 30 when he has faced off against the pair.
...

Should England start with Adil Rashid to stop Warner - Finch?

... Finch has been dismissed thrice in 17 deliveries of right-arm legspin in this World Cup, and Rashid himself has got him four times in the past. ...

Can the Australian middle order (finally) stand up?

... The rest of their middle order have averaged a combined 27.4, the lowest in the field barring Afghanistan, and last the fewest balls per dismissal. ..."

Can Glenn Maxwell make it a Freaky Thursday for Australia?

https://www.espncricinfo.com/story/_/id ... -australia

"There has been the usual frustration about it. Sometimes Maxwell himself has been the source of it - the three dismissals to short balls against West Indies, South Africa and England for instance. On these occasions, it's been impossible to not go back to what he told ESPNcricinfo before the start of the World Cup: "I've always given people an excuse to probably leave my spot open for grabs, and that's just down to me not performing at the right time or when I have been given those opportunities."

At other times, it's been his team. Australia sent him in too late in the chase against India and then too early against Pakistan. He was always going to be floating in the batting order but, on that Taunton surface, with a great start already banked, they didn't need to go so hard so soon - as Aaron Finch would later admit.
...

He doesn't have a single wicket to show for 49 overs of bowling but, as in the game against Sri Lanka, what has mattered more is how many runs he has not conceded. Until March this year, he had not bowled a full quota of 10 overs in a game since 2015; in this tournament alone he's done it twice, as well as other stints of 6, 7 and 7 overs. Only once has he really been taken apart, against Pakistan at Taunton in a game in which both sides didn't play their specialist spinners and all non-specialist spinners went for runs."

M. Nicholas:

Why it is important for England to win this World Cup

https://www.espncricinfo.com/story/_/id ... -world-cup

[No, Mark, England are just flat-track bullies. It's more important that England don't win this World Cup, so that flat-track bullying on rigged pitches is not rewarded, though I guess the game would recover eventually.]
