WC final:

NZ win toss, bat.

Unchanged teams.

Line: 262.5.
Odds: England 73%, NZ 27%.

-----------------------------------

cricinfo describes the pitch as "surprisingly dry" and the decision of whether to bat or bowl as "tough" (conditions being overcast).

The toss was delayed 15 minutes because of the rain.

Nine's poll says NZ 61%, so Oz viewers are voting with their hearts, and their hearts are ANZAC-infused.

Umpires and players are coming out, players holding hands with kids.

Healy says NZ will be more comfortable at Lord's than they were at the MCG.

Anthem time.
NZ players arm in arm (the ANZAC way), singing.

"God of nations at thy feet...

"God defend New Zealand."

England players arms behind backs (the British way), singing.

So much depends on Guptill here. It's so hard to see how NZ can win here, and most of the ways involve Guptill going big. He's had a rotten tournament with the bat. In 1999, Gilchrist had a bad time with the bat and in the final scored a rapid 50. The difference is that the team didn't rely on his batting, and NZ probably need more than a quick 50 from Guptill.

First ball from Woakes swing and miss from Guptill. Wide of off stump and called. NZ are away!

Guptill mistimes the fourth ball.

Guptill gets a 4 through gully. It was in the air and uncontrolled.

NZ 0/5 (1).

Archer from the other end. It's so sad for Cricket that he is not playing for WI.

Nicholls gets a LB, so not off the mark.

Guptill wants a run, Nicholls says no, and Guptill scrambles back. Guptill was 1/3 way down the pitch.

NZ have not been the greatest between wickets this tournament. In the previous England-NZ game, both Kane & Ross wererun out.

England believe they have Guptill caught behind. Not out, from Erasmus. No review!

Nasser is a huge fan of Erasmus.

Not even close to out. It clipped his hip. Great decision from Erasmus. The original reaction of the England players was just celebration, rather than appeal. That is not very sportsmanlike either. If they genuinely believed it was out, they would have reviewed.

Nicholls given LBW. He reviews with a few seconds left.

It looks bad...

Pitching in line. Hitting in line. Going over!! :)

Nasser: "He learnt from Durham." He should have reviewed from the same bowler in Durham and didn't.

In my post at the time, I wondered whether Nicholls didn't value his wicket enough, and whether they'd have reviewed immediately if it were Kane or Ross, their premier batsmen.

It's amazing how much bounce there is. He looked dead.

Nasser: "Root can't believe it. He's half celebrating."

Guptill upper-cuts Archer for 6! There was a man there. It cleared him.

Clarke: "Brilliant shot from Marty Guptill."

And Guptill lofts down the ground for 4!

Keep going, Guptill!

Baz M. says they will/should try to push forward for Woakes to negate the swing and LBW threat, but hang back against Archer. Nasser says Archer's natural length is short and he should bowl fuller here.

It's early but this is a good start from NZ, who have had an awful opening partnership this WC.

Guptill is away: 18* (16). But they need a century from him here. I'd prefer 150 from him. NZ cannot keep leaving everything to Williamson, who has scored over 30% of his team's runs this tournament.

--------------------------------------

At the start of the 6th over, the broadcast predictor says 313. At the start it was 305.

Nasser: "Nicholls just battling here."

Clarke says 5 players from the NZ team played in the 2015 final, so they'll be better prepared for this final.

Odds: England 64%, NZ 36%.
Line: 270.5.

Nasser: "Fist sign of England blinking. Slip comes out."

Guptill given LBW. They review after some discussion. It looked out to Nasser.

Almost no ball, but not.

It looks bad...

No edge. "3 reds." Guptill is out for 19 and the review is lost. :(

NZ 1/29 (6.2).
.....................

Healy: "I think they've bowled too short. ... They need to pitch it up."

The best Test batsman in the world, Williamson, is in. Nervous times for NZ. If England get him early, it becomes really hard.

Baz says England are "gambling" with a 7-2 off-leg field, trying to set him up for the same dismissal.

Nasser says the slot is where you'll get smashed when the ball's not moving, but wickets when it is moving.

Odds: England 73%, NZ 27%.
Line: 254.5.

In the 8th over, a quick single from Nicholls. He dived at the non-striker's end.

Williamson is beaten. No edge.

...........................................

Athers makes fun of Paul Collingwood's MBE. A bad decision that one (not just PC's, but the whole Ashes squad). It just cheapens the Queen's honours.

.................................................................

Ian Smith: "Tough going at the moment."

.................................................................

Smith and Athers add their praise for the earlier Erasmus not-out decision. Athers says he thought it was out initially. He says Erasmus is the pre-eminent umpire in the world.

Bishop says Archer should be bowling fuller.

Bishop: "While the ball's still hard, he can go fuller."

Athers: "He's not a swing bowler. He's a line bowler." Athers mentions McGrath.

At the start of the 11th over, the broadcast predictor says 291.

Line: 250.5.

Nicholls cuts Woakes for 4. That'll help.

Odds: England 70%, NZ 30%.
..........................................

First change. Plunkett to bowl the 12th over.

NZ take a quick single and get a bonus overthrow.

Nicholls pulls, safely enough, but just for 2.

Athers on Nicholls: "He seems happier when he can sit on the back foot."

At 1/46 (12), the broadcast predictor says 295.

Odds: England 68%, NZ 32%.
Line: 255.5.

Woakes is kept on for his 7th over.

The NZ batting lineup is so thin, it scares me.

................................................................

Nasser comments on the famous lateness with which Williamson plays the ball.

Williamson is just 3* (23).

Meanwhile, Nicholls hits another 4 through square leg. He's laid the foundations of a solid innings now.

................................................................

Wood comes on for the 15th over.

Williamson swings and misses to a wide.

Ganguly: "I think they'll get a bit more help than they did in Manchester" (from the pitch).

Williamson finally helps a ball down legside to the boundary for 4.

---------------------------------------------

Nicholls pulls for 4. Two 4s in a row for NZ. The bowling is not quite there at the moment.

Ganguly praises Nicholls.

At 1/67 (15.4), the broadcast predictor says 300.

Odds: England 66%, NZ 34%.
Line: 262.5.

Ganguly on Williamson: "He has a tremendous demeanour."

-----------------------------------------------------------

Ganguly: "NZ just starting to control the innings."

NZ 1/70 (17).

---------------------------------------------

Rashid comes on for the 18th over.

Nicholls cuts for 4. He's starting to look quite comfortable.
The 50 partnership is up.

Ganguly thinks Wood and Plunkett are bowling not so well.
The commentators speculate about Stokes.

------------------------------------------------

Williamson lofts Rashid for 4.

Baz M.: "The kiwi skipper just starting to pick things up a bit."

And he follows up first ball of the next over with a nice cover drive, but gets only 3, as Bairstow dives and saves on the boundary.

------------------------------------------------

Baz thinks Morgan should bring Archer back now.

Appeal for caught behind. Not out. They review immediately. Spike on Ultra Edge.

Williamson is out. 30 (53).

NZ 2/103 (22.4). Ross Taylor in.

Healy: "Good hard work" (from NZ).

Athers: "The wicket came at a good time. ... They couldn't have asked for a bigger wicket than Williamson."

Clarke: "Again it was the length. ... Cross seam from Plunkett."

Odds: England 70%, NZ 30%.
Line: 260.5.

The broadcast predictor says 287.
