Warne says Lyon is harder to sweep than Moeen, because of the overspin Lyon puts on the ball.

Meanwhile, Pattinson has been brought back.

Oz desperately need a wicket. Get one and more may follow quickly.

On less technical stuff, the numbers on the shirts look very ugly. What is the ICC thinking?

And the Edgbaston crowd I find very irritating, but it's hard to see how it can be intimidating. The ground capacity is only 25,000 and it can't be 100% doing the same thing. It's hard to be intimidating in a legal manner if there are only 10,000 of you doing something.

Oz want the ball changed. They don't get their way.

Wade has been fielding at mid-off. The two extra keepers in this Test don't get to field in the slips.

It must be terrible having to sit near the Balmy Army. You could bring your earplugs, but who wants to watch cricket like that?

Sangakkara says Burns's inability to play on the offside is due to his front shoulder.

Meanwhile, there is a Cookie Monster in the crowd.

Root pops the ball in the air off a Cummins delivery into him, but as so often today the ball finds the gap.

Frustrating times for Oz.

The pitch looks dead right now, but England face batting last.

A run-out chance goes begging, as Khawaja misses the stumps. England bring up their 150.

Is it time for a part-time bowler? Head? Smith?

The English commentators were fascinated by Wade's bowling before play.

Root c&b Siddle!

Siddle took a good catch in his right hand and gets reward for playing the role he was chosen for: holding up one end.

England 2/154 (50).

Siddle beats Denly outside off stump.

Denly had a few words to say before the Test. Cocky for someone who has achieved nothing internationally so far. Let's see if he can bat on a flat pitch. It's a shame Root isn't there to run him out again. Maybe Burns can do the job.

Just two wickets in two sessions.

Hard work for Oz.

They'll hope for better after the tea break.

Taylor says Oz will need 4 wickets this session to keep things even.

Oz have not had a lot of luck today, but they haven't taken their half chances either.

Labu is on as sub fielder.

They get the ball changed. It swings! (They say the original ball swung 0.4 degrees; the changed ball is swinging 2 degrees!)

And then Pattinson gets Denly plumb LBW.

Buttler is the new batsman.

Warne: "This ball change has made a massive difference."

Cummins gets Buttler caught at third slip!

Good catch from Bancroft.

England 4/194.

Stokes is the new batsman.

The bowlers are looking so much better with the changed ball.

Burns gets a very, very lucky century, marked by countless plays and misses.

Even on 99, he was beaten all ends up twice by Lyon. And he was LBW to Lyon in his 20s, when he was given not out, and Oz foolishly did not review.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Late in the day, the broadcast tells us Burns has had 34 plays and misses (and counting).

England 4/267 at stumps.

Oz in trouble now. The pitch on day two was very slow and flat, but beginning to disintegrate, with a couple of balls scuttling. England are supposed to bat last on this, but if they get a lead of 150, there may only be three innings.

They have to be able to get Smith out when he isn't chancing his arm. There's a possibility they could do that, I suppose, but I wouldn't be betting on it. I think it's more likely that we're 9/149 and Smith takes us to 9/400 and declares. He's one of two test-standard batsmen in these sides (the other is Warner, who may not be given out ridiculously lbw in the next dig or, if he is, might think about reviewing) and looks genuinely to be one of Australia's greatest players of all time.

As for Burns, it seems he was given not out when he was out in his 20s and we didn't review - the two missed reviews on Warner and Burns may cost Australia a 300 run turnaround, all-up. They do need to be better at reviews. In the new Test cricket world, reviewing is as important as fielding and only slightly behind batting and bowling in the strategic order of skills.
