Was his first name "donSteven"? That would be a remarkable coincidence.

It's a slow pitch, but the not-so-quick Stokes managed to bang Smith on the helmet. That makes the Oz refusal to bounce Broad early look pretty bad.
( http://magpies.net/nick/bb/viewtopic.ph ... 87#1923187 )

That partnership could easily end up being the difference between the two sides.

Another thing from the first innings: Wade's wide (you didn't miss Wade's bowling, did you?) was nowhere near as bad as at least one, possibly two, of the uncalled wides of Stokes. It was near that white marker on the off side. The Stokes ball was that wide or wider, but on the leg side. Paine took the Wade delivery upright; Bairstow had to dive to stop the Stokes delivery. If Oz end up losing by four runs or fewer... (Well, they won't, because England will bat last, but you know what I mean.)

^ Yes, it seems team management thought Australia was "above" that - or, possibly, that public relations dictated that we not kill England's only Test-standard bowler.

C. Barrett, Fairfax:

'Having torn through England’s middle order before lunch as the hosts lost 4-18 to slip to 8-300, Australia’s fast bowlers curiously refrained from bouncing Broad until the No.10 batsman and Woakes had put on 65.

An over of short stuff from Pat Cummins (3-84) ultimately brought reward as Broad, all at sea, skied a ball to Pattinson at fine leg. But it was hard to escape the conclusion that Australia had left it too late.

Broad is known to have been highly uncomfortable against such tactics since he had his nose badly broken when a bouncer sent down by India’s Varun Aaron careered through his grille five years ago.

“I was a little surprised they didn’t attack him once he came in... a bouncer barrage,” former Australia paceman Glenn McGrath told the BBC. “Once they did that they got him out, but he got too many runs.”

Pattinson said the instructions were to bowl to the tailenders just as they would to the top order and stem the flow of runs, adding that the lack of bounce in the slow pitch made it hard to produce bumpers.

"Patty Cummins was just saying that he thought the ball was almost hitting him on the toe, that’s how short he had to bowl to get it up," he said.'

Odds:

England 58%
Oz 30%
Draw 12%.

It's good that, according to the money, an Oz win is at least more likely than a draw again.

Head is looking quite good again. This time, he needs to go on with it.

(I don't know why 9 has dumped coverage back to their secondary channel. )

----------------------------------------

The broadcast reminds us of the FOW: 13, 27, 75.

This is a good partnership, but they cannot stop now. The lead is only in the 70s.

Moeen Ali is bowling poorly, the commentators say.

He bowls a full toss that Head puts away straight down the ground.

Lloyd: "He's all over the place."

Stokes is on, and they say it'll be a double change, with Woakes coming on at the other end.

------------------------------

They were half-right. It's a double change, but Denly.

Stokes bowls a ball almost off the pitch down leg, and he doesn't get away with it this time. Wide.

And later in the over, the century partnership comes up.

Nasser: "... carry on. Double up."

--------------------------------------------

Healy: "Nearly the best hour in the game."

But I wonder if the pitch has settled down again.

Warne: "As the Test went on, I enjoyed bowling to left-handers.

"Very hard for the left-hander with the ball spinning back in.

"Look at those footmarks outside the off stump."

Now Stokes bowls a no ball... which reminds me that Lyon's wicket of Burns yesterday was perilously close to a no ball -- inexcusable for a spinner.

And then Smith runs the short ball down for a boundary.

And another four, squarer.

The partnership is 111. The lead is almost into three figures.

Botham comments on the pitch...

Smith almost holed out to leg gully. That reminded me off him holing out to Guptill (though it was not the same stroke).
