Smith drives the overpitched Broad ball straight back for 4.

Again off the back foot.

Warne says he'd pick Virat over all formats, but Smith in Tests.

He repeats that Viv Richards is the best batsman he ever saw.

Archer gets Paine caught at bat pad.

Oz 6/162.

This is not a good score. Paine shakes his head as he walks off.

Cummins is in. Warne anticipates the bumper revenge that Archer promised.

Archer doesn't disappoint... but it's just runs for Oz.

12 runs from the over. The last ball was a bumper that was too hot for Bairstow and gave Oz 4 byes.

Well, he's right. He was so good that he was mesmerising. He had, however, a batting average about a dozen runs per innings below Steve BradSmith's.

And we can see why - wickets falling around him, talentless hacks to the left and right of him, the Former Captain has got to 70, again.

Seriously, Smith is such a force that you are never quite certain whether England will wrap things up and lead by 50 - or get Smithed again - and trail by 200.

Smith flays the full ball from Archer for 4 off the back foot.

Holding says pre-lunch England's bowlers bowled 16% of deliveries full to Smith. They have increased that after lunch, but Holding wonders why now when the ball is old.

Holding: "I'm happy if every over goes for five 4s and a wicket. ... 1/20. Who goes through a career with those figures?"

He says bowlers are scared to bowl the yorker.

.........

But Archer hits Smith with a short ball. The crowd is happy. The physio comes out.

Warne: "Big moment this. ... He's in a bit of pain too, Steve Smith."

He worries it's broken.

It looks very ugly. The series could hang on what happens here.

If they haven't broken his arm, they're going to be seriously sorry - it will just make him knuckle down.

But that's evidence that these numbers are meaningless... Well, not meaningless, but you'd have to be crazy not to think very hard about inflation here. Otherwise, you'd say over the past few years there have been four or five batsmen vastly superior to Viv, which is a ridiculous claim.

People who are sure of Steve's batting greatness are fixated on those numbers without context.

Well, he's not knuckling down. Looks like he may go down swinging.

Cummins should take Archer.

Appeal against Cummins for caught behind. Not out.

They review at the last second.

Daylight!! They are seeing ghosts! I think Bairstow's eyes were bulging again.

Cummins is on strike to Leach.

Lloyd: "He's just got to try to support Steve Smith."

Normally, yes, but I don't know about that now. His forearm could have a hairline fracture, for all we know. I think Cummins needs to take charge and at least see off Archer. Maybe Smith can play Leach.

He's clearly in a lot of pain.

Runs don't equal redemption. Playing hurt logically shouldn't either, but psychologically... If he bats for an hour with a broken arm...

And Cummins caresses a full ball from Archer for 4.

That's it, Pat.

Lloyd: "It's thrilling stuff. The remarkable thing is it's his 26th over."

Cummins plays out the over, just as I wanted.

He signals to the dressing room for something.

Lloyd: "Really struggling."

The question is what happens next Test.
