He's hitting out. He hits Woakes for 4.

And more classically, the next ball goes for 4 on the off side. Again driven off the back foot.

And the next one for 4 straight through the covers. They better pray to their deity of choice that they get him quickly.

He could make runs or he could get out.

Archer is warming up. Athers wonders whether Root could really bring him back after so many overs.

Warne: "Don't go anywhere."

.........

Warne: "This is a moment in the series... Send a message."

I think the moment is not now but whether there's a break in Smith's forearm. This Test should still end in a draw. It's the next three that matter.

Is he warming up? I thought he was trying to stretch out a hamstring tightness.

England are not bowling all that well with the new ball. Cummins looks comfortable.

The new ball is bending around - Siddle and Cummins have played and missed at every second delivery. It would feel like raising the white flag to bring on Archer - it would just be an admission that they don't think they have a bowler good enough to get his wicket.

That's the correct call - they keep the ball in the hands of their best new ball bowlers.

Smith to 92 with a streaky four as the ball moves away to take the thick edge.

Smith edges past the slips for 4.

And then an appeal for LBW. Not out. They won't review.

And they get him with a good ball, lbw. That's how the game should be played. None of that stupid bravado rubbish.

Three red lights. Oz lose a review.

Athers: "He didn't pick the inswinger from Chris Woakes."

Lyon comes in.

He's beaten.

With that soft 92, Smith's series average has plummeted to 124.7. That's, of course, almost double the next best average in the series (Burns, 66).

Do you think? I was thinking the strategy might be to let them smack up a 20-20 pace 450+ lead and then try to run it down in the last 15 overs.
