The only factor, or should be, when pronouncing a sportsman's name, or any name, is how they pronounce it. It's their name. Their choice.
So, if a person wants to be 'Co-burn', instead of the way it looks (Cockburn), fine.
I well remember comms getting twisted knickers over Nicky Boje's (former Proteas' spinner) name.
Instead of simply going to the teams' dressing room and asking him, they tried: Bo-zhay, Boy-ay, Boy-er, Boo-yeah, B'zhere, Bo-jay etc.
Same with Murali and other Sri Lankan players, when they appeared on the International cricket scene. Comms would muddle through with their own versions. Again. Just go and ask the player or team management.

J. Liew's telling sounds like he's pretty chuffed that the Welsh can pronounce it correctly (but the only possible difficulty is the consonant sound at the end of the third syllable).
The complication is that it sounds like he also wants simplicity, so if people are going to botch it, he (moreso his wife) finds it easier if they just go with an Anglicised version.
It's not uncommon for that to happen, and players can be inconsistent in what they tell journos. (And Demetriou was mocked for pronouncing Camporeale's name correctly at the Brownlow night, because an Anglicised version was the norm. He said that he called the household, and Scott's father told him how to pronounce it.)
