They take a risky two, but Root doesn't get it on the stumps. Safe.

Paine walks out of view...

They (i.e. umpire Erasmus) return to the run out. Root breaks the stumps with his hands. The ball is not in his hands. It's not out.

Lots of swings and misses now.

Lyon tries to sweep Root. 4 byes. The 50 partnership is up.

No sign of a declaration. Maybe Paine wants 500.

Now Lyon advances and hits Root over long on for 4.

Single to end the over.

Paine declares.

Oz 8/497d (126).

Starc opens.

Gower: "Slightly erratic over, but it's a maiden technically."

Some swing and pace, but some wide balls.

Hazlewood from the other end, the "James Anderson end".

Denly leaves and is struck on the thigh guard.

Beaten next ball.
...

Another play and miss. Is Denly really capable of opening?
But now he gets off the mark.

Burns plays the last ball uncomfortably.

Good over from Hazlewood.

Starc hits Denly on the body.

He took his eyes of the ball. (Have a look at Ponting's comments in the last Test.)

Gower: "It is not a great way to play the short ball. ... It's glove on to shoulder. ... You'll play it a lot better if you keep your eye on the ball. Instinct will take over if you do that."

Hazlewood beats Denly again.

Now a big appeal for LBW. Erasmus says it's not out. They don't review. It's going down leg. (Ball tracking shows even impact was umpire's call.)

Beats Denly again.

Athers: "It's a ball that Denly has to try to leave."

Another good over from Hazlewood.

Cummins now.

Burns steps out and gets 3.

Every run is being cheered. Fine, as long as the umpires don't get intimidated. You have to wonder about the match- or series- or WC-deciding wrong umpire's calls in the last couple of months. Have the crowds intimidated these umpires?

More runs from a short, wide ball.

Not a great over so far from Pat.

Athers wonders who the night watchman is. Leach, he guesses.

But now it looks like bad-boy racial abuser Overton is padded up. Athers says maybe there are two night watchmen. Holding thinks that would be too pessimistic.

Burns had to drop his hands and arch his back quickly for that short ball from Hazlewood. More good bowling.

But now a no ball. It was a huge no ball.

As Holding implies, the umpires are doing the bowler a favour if they pick it up. Holding says they are used to getting away with it, assuming umpires don't look, and then they get a wicket and find out.

Athers says he gets emails accusing him of spending too much time in America.
Athers: "I don't spend any time in America."

Holding: "I've never head the word used so much in any other part of the world: 'obviously'."
But I don't know if he means the UK or US!

Cummins splits Denly in half. There's too much bounce for it to threaten the bails.
.......

But now Cummins gets Denly, caught on the second attempt by Wade at short leg. He dived to get the rebound off his chest in his right hand only.

England 1/10 (6.5).

Who is the night watchman? It is the racial abuser Overton.

He gets off the mark immediately.

Holding: "He kept his eyes on it throughout. Didn't panic."

Athers says the short leg is a good position for Denly because not only does he sometimes "flinch", but he also "defends with a closed bat face".

As the day draws to a close, Lyon comes on.

Burns cuts the slightly short ball in the air for 4.

Athers says his weight was "coming away from the shot", so he needs to be a bit careful.

Now an inside edge nutmegging Paine for a lucky 4.

Athers: "Burns into double figures."

10 off the over.

Cummins beats bad boy Overton's outside edge.

Root is standing up in the pads in the dressing room.

Meanwhile, Overton pulls away as Cummins comes in to bowl. The crowd cheers.

Athers: "We'll definitely get another one."
Athers wonders whether Leach has his pads on as well.

Hazlewood bowls the final over. Overton on strike.

Paine can be heard chattering. Something about "... all over this bloke".

Athers: "He's looked pretty solid, actually."
Holding says another positive is that the night watchman pushes Roy down to 5.

Stumps. England 1/23 (10).
