Hazlewood starts the day's play.

Appeal for LBW. Not out. Going down leg. Ball tracking shows even the impact was umpire's call.

Warne & Nasser praise the Oz bowling in general.

Warne (on the Root dismissal): "Joe Root just stood there. He could not believe he was bowled."

Warne notes a lack of "calmness" in Roy's batting.

Cummins beats Roy.

But Roy hits a boundary on the leg side.
Warne: "Not convincing but good enough."

Hazlewood beats Denly again.

The broadcast shows "intercept points vs seam" for Denly & Roy. Roy is hitting the ball further in front of his body. Denly is "not bad", says Warne.

-----------------------------------

Now Denly hits it airily just short of mid off.

And another LBW appeal. Not out. Paine waves his glove to indicate he thinks it's going down leg.
I agree. And ball tracking confirms.

Warne: "Test cricket is a hard game. ... It's not easy all the time. When you're not bowling at your best or batting at your best, that's when you need to hang in and find a way."

Now it's Botham's turn to point out the flaws in Roy's technique.

He shows with split screen first Denly hitting the ball under his head, and then Roy planting his foot forward and hitting in front of his head.

---------------------------------------

Warne suggests there's a "lack of patience" by Oz, shown in the field changes.

Cummins beats Roy again. Roy's feet look glued to the pitch.

Warne praises the bowling: "Cummins and Hazlewood have to be as good as there's been for a long time."

The broadcast camera pans to McGrath in the media box. Tony Jones is in front of him. (Now that Fairfax is owned by Nine, it looks like they are not bothering much with sending journos to the UK. We know A. Wu is there, but it's all a bit strange having Baum write opinion pieces on the cricket when he must be in Melbourne.)

Roy again has an awkward moment, almost falling over himself.

Nasser goes for understatement: "Fair to say Jason Roy's balance at the crease not quite where he wants it at the moment."

Nasser: "Close to a no ball, that last delivery."

Warne says there are no demons in the pitch.

First change of the day: Starc to bowl from the B. Statham end.
Lyon is warming up too.

Ponting: "Beautiful conditions for batting."
He says now is the best time to bat.

Ponting: "Big day for Nathan Lyon. Never easy to bowl your team to victory."

He says the batsmen are beginning to look a bit more confident in defence.

Oz need a wicket soon.

Denly swings at a very wide ball from Starc, and edges high through slips for 4. Marnus at third slip did not react at all to it.

Ponting: "It should have been Labuschagne's. ... His head was a little low."

Lyon now.

Athers says it's a big moment. He notes Lyon's "diminishing returns".

Ponting: "An aggressive start from Lyon with his off-side field."

Denly sweeps for 4.
...

Denly goes again, but straight to the boundary fielder this time.

Athers: "Slight danger against Lyon is the bounce..."

As Starc bowls, Ponting suggests a "hint of reverse swing". The shiny side of the ball was towards the batsman, and "if anything it came back in".

Now Starc overpitches and Roy on drives for 4.

10 overs today gone.
England 2/42 (17).

Inside edge from Roy off Lyon flies over bat pad. It's Marnus.
...

And now Denly almost holes out with the sweep. It bounced a couple of feet in front of Head in the deep.

Athers: "An eventful over."

England riding their luck here.

And Starc bowls a good short ball that Denly has no clue about. It bobbed up but not to a fielder.

He took his eyes off the ball. It could easily have given a catch.

There's a short extra cover. Denly is driving hard to him.
And Smith is doing shadow batting in the field.

Oz need a wicket here...

The 50 partnership comes up. There are cheers from the crowd. The crowd is annoying me.

Ponting says they've looked good this morning. Surely, not Roy, Ricky?

Botham says the rough created by Starc is bothering Roy. he says Roy's attempts to pat it down are probably doing more harm than good.

Athers says Lyon will love having Starc in the team.

Now Starc comes around the wicket. Ponting says that's generally a sign there's a little reverse swing.
