Some top order batsmen are expected to play 'backbone' innings in 50 over matches. Khawaja is one. Also the likes of Root, S Marsh, du Plessis etc.
...
Maybe I should put this in the WC thread, but I think Khawaja just got in the way of Smith in the WC. They both lack power hitting (and Khawaja, despite one very good catch on the boundary line, is a terrible fielder), so it's hard to fit them in the one side. Root did far, far better in the WC than either.
List A pertinent stats.

Khawaja averages 48.10 with a strike rate of 86.55

Finch (including his 188*) averages 40.66 with a strike rate of 89.1

So, Ussy has a much better average and similar s/r as one of the best Limited Overs batsmen in the World.
By the way, the ODI stats of those two are almost identical to their List A numbers. Khawaja's average is lower but still higher than Finch's.

Both of them were culpable in Oz's dismal WC campaign. (Not that they were alone. It's a struggle to name any unqualified successes in the Oz squad.)
