Australia A squad: Alex Carey (c), Marcus Harris, Joe Burns, Usman Khawaja, Will Pucovski, Travis Head, Nic Maddinson, Michael Neser, Jhye Richardson, Sean Abbott, Riley Meredith.
Media say CA are grooming Carey for captaincy. If that works, it'd at least have the advantage of a perfectly smooth transition from whenever Paine retires, since Carey will take the gloves at that time.

I think that would be bad for cricket, for the reasons stated elsewhere. And he's not even a good captain anyway, so it's sacrificing cricket's name for little reason (accept the leadership void in cricket). I'm trying to think when he ever made an impressive tactical decision.
The best would be for Paine to maintain a certain level and play on as long as possible.

This is an interesting piece of trivia.
It reminds me of the English commentator (Nasser, maybe?) in the ODI WC, prompted by Carey batting, asking Clarke which of AFL players or cricketers make more money. Clarke said cricketers! There's no way that's true for the average cricketer/AFL player! Maybe Clarke has had a lot of financial success from his playing career, but most cricketers don't make nearly the same amount as the equivalent AFL player. Imagine if you just scrape into the top 200 cricketers in the country. Maybe you have a state contract. Maybe you don't. I suppose if you're a slogger, you get the BBL financial boost... A top-200 AFL player is comfortably in the best dozen players at his club. He's earning many hundreds of thousands of dollars each year. True, the average lifetime of a football career is very short, probably a lot shorter than that of a Shield player...
