Ken, have you ever tried opening the batting? Oz may need your help, especially if the 16-year-old makes the batters look like fools! Remember: age is just a number, just like Smith's inflated batting average. 8)

ALL stats are 'just numbers'

The Williamsons, Kohlis, Bradmans etc. all make/made ducks, even though they have high averages.

Hell, even Steve Smith has had 4 ducks in Test cricket !!

It's a game. Enjoy it. :D

^ I've watched his last two hands - he can have the number 6 spot any time they like. It's hard to tell at this stage how he'll develop but he certainly has talent to burn.

Another meaningless number: WWOS tells us "Khawaja ... averages 96.80 atop the order".

Ha ha ha ha ha! Serial nicker Khawaja averages almost a century at the top of the order. With such batting "greats", how did Oz manage to fail to win an Ashes series against an England team that was skittled for 85 against Murtagh?

It's sad that Pucovski has health concerns, because many wanted him in the Test team.

Pakistan is 0/43 from 21.1 overs. Anyone watching? Is the ball deviating at all?

Looking at the Gabba Test records, Australia hasn't been beaten there for 31 years (West Indies) and has only failed to win there once this decade. On the other hand, the last Test against Pakistan was a thriller (Australia by 39 runs, 3 years ago), in which Australia batted first, made 429 (guess which Australian batsman and former captain with a Test average over 60 top-scored with 130?), bowled Pakistan out for 142, Australia declared at 5/202 (guess which Australian batsman and former captain with a Test average over 60 scored 63 from 70 to set up the declaration?) and then bowled Pakistan out for 450 (guess which Australian batsman and former captain with a Test average over 60 ran the last man out to secure the win?).

From the early going, the boot may be on the other foot, this time.

Media report: first time in history that Australian bowlers have been held wicketless in a first session on day one of a Gabba Test.

The pitches are getting deader and deader. It's a terrible shame. We used to know that we could expect something good from the Gabba and Waca. And when it's a win anyway, everyone will excuse the pitch by saying that there was a result. That's not the problem. There's nothing wrong with draws, but dead pitches are an existential threat to the game.
