ICC Test Ratings.
No, he's not. He's very good in a local context, but everyone wants to talk about global history. And, yes, it is going overboard when he is praised for the luck he gets, e.g. Baum implying that he forced his part-nemesis Leach to bowl the no ball that reprieved him. That's just baloney that a disciplined journo would not have written.
Do you seriously think that the standard of Test batting in the world has not fallen off a cliff?
As for your claims about not getting an armchair ride, well, that's just vague speculation about psychology, i.e. that it's difficult batting in a bad team. The more important factor is whether the batting itself is technically difficult. That includes where you come in to bat. Look at how much harder it is for Root just moving up one spot from 4 to 3. And Smith hasn't been in a situation, as far as I can remember, where he is literally batting to save or win the match (e.g. guiding a run chase home or batting out day 5).
When is he supposed to have batted with the flu? Yesterday? Is that the excuse the fans have come up with for all the trouble he had with Curran?

Another: Matt Wade is a 4 centuries Test batsman but is ranked 78th (up 32 places after his 5th. Test ton).Donny wrote:Sids is way low because, if a player is still available but not getting selected (for whatever reason), he loses ratings points, every time his team plays..
He's missed many Tests over recent years. Played just 27 in 7 years - missing Tests when Nevill & Paine were selected to keep.

With the news Root is dropping back to 4 in the batting order, I looked at his averages:
At 3: 49 innings, 1792 runs at 38.12, with 2 centuries & 13 50s.
At 4: 61 innings, 2807 runs at 48.39, with 7 centuries & 20 50s.
Joe isn't everyone, but batting at 3 is harder.
Others haven't played a lot in both positions, so it's harder to make a meaningful comparison.
e.g. Kohli:
At 3: 6 innings, 97 runs at 19.40, with 0 centuries or 50s.
At 4: 94 innings, 5270 runs at 59.21, with 21 centuries and 13 50s.
e.g. S. Waugh:
At 3: 7 innings, 252 runs at 36.00, with 1 century and 1 50.
At 5: 142 innings, 6754 runs at 56.28, with 24 centuries and 29 50s.
But e.g. Greg Chappell played a bit more (at 3), so he may be almost as good an example as Root:
At 3: 38 innings, 1649 runs at 43.39, with 5 centuries and 6 50s.
At 4: 86 innings, 4316 runs at 59.12, with 15 centuries and 19 50s.
Admittedly, not everyone has a worse record at 3 than 4. e.g. David Gower:
At 3: 56 innings, 2619 runs at 49.41, with 8 centuries and 10 50s.
At 4: 91 innings, 3223 runs at 38.36, with 3 centuries and 20 50s.

India batsman Rohit Sharma, who became the first player to score a century in each innings of his maiden Test as an opener, on Monday jumped to a career-best 17th position in the ICC Test Player Rankings.
Rohit, who now has five centuries from 28 Tests, gained a whopping 36 slots after his knocks of 176 and 127 in the first Test against South Africa in Visakhapatnam helped India win by 203 runs and take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
The other opener Mayank Agarwal has also attained a career-best 25th position after his first innings double-century lifted him 38 places.
Captain Virat Kohli, who retained his second spot, has dropped below the 900-point mark for the first time since January 2018. He is now on 899 points, 38 behind top-ranked Steve Smith of Australia.

Steve Smith at number 1, again? There must be something wrong with the metrics, Donny.
Since Cummins is plainly, just watching him with the naked eye, the best bowler in world cricket by a considerable margin, it must just be a problem with how they assess the batsmen. They obviously need to stop using total runs, 100s and 50s for assessing batsmen because a guy who isn't any good is topping all of those things. It's a quandary.

Will be interesting, when the new ratings come out.
Warner 335 n.o.
Smith 36.
Root 226.
Labuschagne 162.
Williamson 104 n.o. (when rain stopped play, today)
Lyon 5/63.
Starc 6/66.
Lyon & Starc will both move up and Warner & Labu should make the top 10. Smith will probably drop to #2.
