A tale of 2 'send ins'.

Two SS matches started today. In both instances, the home teams were inserted (as they say).

At the SCG, the Vics skipper, Peter Handscomb sent a strong NSW team (incl. Smith, Hughes, Henriques, Starc, Hazelwood, Abbott, Lyon) in.

All out 165, including 3 wickets to rookie paceman, Mitchell Perry.

At stumps, Victoria was 0/61 from only 13 overs, led by Nic Maddinson's 43* from 38 balls.

In Hobart, Q'land's captain, Usman Khawaja asked the locals to bat.

Stumps. 7/293, with Caleb Jewell not out on 131.

I see FTB Smith made 7 from 35 balls. He was caught behind off Perry. His problem seems to be that he came in at #3, which is too high for someone with a defective technique. Maybe NSW should have put Patterson in at #3 to shield Smith more. Not that Patterson lasted long.

I can't say I'm surprised. OTOH, the Myth-of-Smith-ers must be in a constant state of shock and confusion. If you buy the Myth of Smith, nothing in cricket makes sense. As I've said ( https://magpies.net/nick/bb/viewtopic.p ... 59#2013759 ), you'd have to believe that his form has been doing some crazy yo yo thing between top form and bottom form for months. Up and down and up and down and up and down and up and down... The truth is much simpler: It's just when the pitch is extremely flat, and the bowlers are the 3rd XI, and when it doesn't matter, that Smith can FTB. On pitches a little less dead, when at least half of the 1st XI bowlers are playing, and the result matters, Smith fails. I mean, this Shield failure came only days after slogging runs in a one-day match against the same opponent.

A. Malcolm on Moises (67): "Henriques showed the value of soft hands and playing late on a pitch with plenty of sideways movement."

Vic 2/117 now. Rain delay.
