Should be many more lost ball penalties and 3 off the tee.
I marshalled at Huntingdale , Victoria and Royal Melbourne. The pros hit it so far it would be near impossible for them to see where the ball went some times. Plus they would elect to go back to the tee which is a time issue. The marshalls are also there to stop dickheads souveniring a ball or spectators stomping all over the place and stepping on the ball or kicking it out etc. Also helps the tv camera operators to know where to point.
The players are usually very respectful and thankful if you stop them spending time looking for a ball. Given they take for ever on the greens or to set up.
The marshalls should indicate the general vicinity of the ball (or as you say, stop people souveniring it) and then give the player and caddie their 3 minutes to find it....especially at The Open.
As for elect, I don't think the player can elect...they have to go back to the tee for a lost ball. They don't have the local rule of dropping 1m into the fairway with a 2 shot penalty.
