Post by Presti35 »

Any interest?

I used to tell people I preferred the winter games, but the vibe just isnt there this time. I usually watch the Hockey. But for me, something doesnt feel the same this time.

None at all.

I didn't even know they were on until I saw a commercial the other night.

I must say, since I made the decision to stop watching or listening to the news, life is much more peaceful. 8)

Couldn't agree more with that Skids!!

I've been watching the Winter Olympics as a sort of default position - when the TV is on and there's nothing else I have an interest in, I've watched them. Like with most sports, I get hooked in easily though.
Like with most sports, I end up shouting at the commentators to STFU!!!

It's not been a great games. And I usually prefer the Winter Games.

The coverage has been a shambles. You've got special comments coming from people that have no idea about the sport or about the actual competitors. The classic channel 7 over selling excitement and over use of the term "The Goat".

Then there's Chinese politics creeping in as well. That's not great.

Australia have 4 medals so far; 1 gold, 2 silver and a bronze, and sit 15th on the table. We hadnt won gold since Vancouver. We won 2 silvers and a bronze in both 2014 and 2018. So we have improved with a gold in '22.

NZ have one gold, I thought they'd have a better run. Finland just one gold, a silver and 2 bronze so far, thats poor for them, however they also didnt do well in 2018. The Canadians also with 1 gold, 4 silvers and 8 bronze so far, last time I think they had 11 golds? Germany and Norway are doing the best, they usually both do well. USA took 5 days to get their first, but now sit third on the table.

It just feels different. The political side of things, along with covid, the athletes complaining about living conditions and food whist the Chinese athletes are living in luxury, the lack of actual winter conditions, and the low amount of competition by countries that usually go well... Bundle that with channel 7's horrific coverage and commentary... Yeah it sucks.

However in good news, Britain are yet to win a medal.

^^ forgot to mention, even the hockey teams dont have NHL players and is lacking the excitement of former games. Will never forget the 2010 finish.

Name names!!

They do like giving former Olympians gigs... so they at least should know their ****...

Dirk Nannes is also on... Before he became a specialist slogathon bowler, he was some sorta skier... I learnt this when I saw him on a "buy your dream house in the country" show!!! Wow... he must've done well ($$$) in his slogathon career. He and his wife had a $4 million budget!!!

I checked and he did not make the Oz team... (Winter Olympics, I mean!! Of course he did play a few slogathons for the Oz cricket team.) But they say he was close...

They will at least come back with 2 silvers. They are playing off in 2 gold medal games in the curling. I believe they still have athletes in the cross country skiing and bobsleigh, but are not expected to medal in those events.

Funnily enough, both curling semi finals went down to the wire and they could have easily found themselves playing for the bronze medals instead.

So yeah, they will at worst get 2 silvers. Too bad.

Do you think GB should be playing as England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales? I believe one of the curling teams is Scottish. Kinda weird how they compete as GB in some sports and events, but as their individual countries in others.

Going back to channel sevens coverage, I've noticed they have removed the "Live and Free" icon when the events are not being shown live. They were criticised for that during the summer games.
