Absolutely love it. I adore people with a bit of spunk and a spirited attitude. A bit like me in my younger days. Long may they continue to defy the odds.stui magpie wrote:These Ukrainians are different cats.
A few videos and stories doing the rounds,
A Ukrainian bloke filmed himself pulling over beside a Russian Tank that had run out of petrol and offered to tow them back to Russia. Lucky for him they laughed.
Some border guards on an Island reportedly told a Russian Warship officer to "Go fvck yourself" after being ordered to surrender. Unlucky for them, the bloke on the boat didn't have a sense of humour.
Another bloke was filmed picking up a Russian Anti tank mine, carrying it off the road and into the forest while casually dangling a smoke in the corner of his mouth.
An old woman filmed approaching some Russian Soldiers in the street, offered them some Sunflower seeds to put in their pockets so when they die in the streets something will grow.
The Ukraine President when offered the chance to be evacuated by the US, apparently replied "I need ammunition, not a lift"
Good luck trying to defeat people like that.

India will hunt with the hounds & run with the hares. They’re good at that.stui magpie wrote:I think you meant "did".
Difference is, Ukraine has been invaded by Russia. India will tread carefully with sanctions as they won't want to piss Russia off.

I guess I'd put it like this:Dave The Man wrote:China are Commies so of Course they Back Putin#26 wrote:I can't believe China aren't siding with the US on this. It's the least they could do after all the goodwill the US has shown them.
China pretends to be communist, but isn't. Russia doesn't pretend to be communist ... and also isn't.
What both have in common is a distrust of democracy and liberal values, and, more importantly, a shared hostility to (and perception of being under threat from) the US. So I think part of the alliance is indeed ideological but, for the most part, it's strategic.

Some would quibble over the precise definition, but I think you could make a case for Cuba, North Korea, Laos and Vietnam still being communist. Maybe Venezuela, too, but not sure exactly what their deal is. Most other formerly communist countries like Nicaragua have followed the Chinese path into some kind of hybrid that mixes all the worst aspects of capitalism and communism together.
Of course, if one wanted to be really picky, even the USSR considered communism a goal rather than the reality of their government at any given point in time (hence the "S" for "Socialist"; they considered socialism, as they defined it, a stage on the way to communism). But what’s clear is that after its collapse, Russia, along with the rest of the former Eastern Bloc, abandoned all traces of communism or socialism from their economic systems. All that’s left behind of that mentality in places like Russia, Belarus and Azerbaijan is the effective dictatorships. Otherwise, Russia is as capitalist as any country on Earth right now.

A woman at the Ukrainian company I mentioned told me they're terrified at the mo, as you would be. I offered a hand in any way and let them know people are behind them, with countries sending increasing help. Should they manage to stay out of harm's way, Elon Musk's Starlink will be of major help to keep their business going. Imagine trying to get work done with that going on around you. Infuriating to see a self-obsessed scumbag wrecking people's lives to fulfil his own delusions of grandeur.
