NFL 2022 competition

Post by Pies4shaw »

Rodgers has just agreed to return for the Packers: https://twitter.com/AaronRodgers12/stat ... 3632568322

Despite number 12 saying he hasn't yet signed, the suggestions are that he will return on a 4-year $200 million deal with $153 million in guaranteed money. "The deal makes Rodgers the highest-paid player in NFL history on an annual basis while also reducing his salary-cap number for 2022."
https://www.nfl.com/news/aaron-rodgers- ... -200m-deal

So he has someone to throw it to, the Pack has put the franchise tag on Davante Adams. Presumably, a deal will now be dne between him and the Packers before the season:
Rodgers and Adams own the Packers' record for most career touchdowns by a quarterback-receiver combination with 68, breaking Rodgers and Jordy Nelson's previous mark of 65.

....

Adams set the Packers' single-season record for receptions (123) and receiving yards (1,553) last season. He became just the sixth player in NFL history with 120-plus catches, 1,500-plus yards and 11-plus touchdown catches in the same season. He's the only player in NFL history with three seasons (2018, 2020-21) of 110-plus catches, 1,350-plus receiving yards and 11-plus receiving TDs and one of just three players in league history with 650-plus receptions, 8,000-plus receiving yards and 70-plus TD catches in his first eight seasons in the NFL; Marvin Harrison and Larry Fitzgerald are the others.
And Russell Wilson is heading to Denver for 3 players and lots of draft picks: https://www.espn.com.au/nfl/story/_/id/ ... er-broncos
The Broncos have agreed to trade quarterback Drew Lock, tight end Noah Fant, defensive lineman Shelby Harris, two first-round picks, two second-round picks and a fifth-round pick to the Seahawks for Wilson and a fourth-round pick, sources said.

The trade gives Denver the quarterback it has sought since Peyton Manning retired, and it gives Seattle a foundation on which to rebuild without the quarterback who led the Seahawks to their only Super Bowl title.
For those interested in speculating aboutv off-season moves, Kevin Seifert has ranked the top 100 free agents, now the franchise tage deadline has passed: https://www.espn.com.au/nfl/insider/sto ... -offseason

The Colts are dumping Wentz, which is a good move. Wasington are acquiring him, which may not be:
The Colts are trading quarterback Carson Wentz to the Washington Commanders for a package of picks, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The Colts will receive the Commanders' third-round draft picks in 2022 and 2023, sources told Schefter. The 2023 third-rounder can become a second-round selection if Wentz plays 70% of Washington's snaps. The teams also swapped second-round picks in 2022, with the Colts moving up from No. 47 overall to No. 42.

Sources told Schefter that Washington will pay the full $28 million due to Wentz for the 2022 season, which includes a $5 million roster bonus coming next week.

There are also rumours that the Giants are chasing Mitchell Trubisky. Memo to the Giants: it isn't too late to bring Eli out of retirement.

And the Guardian's take on the AFC West, now Russell Wilson has gone there to battle it out with Mahomes, Allen and Carr: https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2022/ ... p-of-death

FWIW, I reckon that Mahomes and Allen are so far ahead of the other two that nothing much has changed in that Division.

And Davante Adams has been traded by Green Bay to the Raiders.

What's the point of re-contracting Ridgers and then selling off the only person on the roster who can catch?

Really, picks 22 and 53 for a bloke who is "on the heels of a 2021 season in which he garnered a career-high 1,553 yards, a career-high 123 receptions and 11 touchdowns. It was Adams' fifth season with double-digit TDs, third over 1,000 yards and third with more than 100 catches"? Adams has just become the highest-paid received in NFL history (average of $28.25 million per year for 5 years).

Oh, no - it's happening again.

It seems no-one wants to keep their gun receivers: https://www.nfl.com/news/chiefs-trading ... raft-picks

I wonder what Patrick Mahomes thinks about that?

https://www.espn.com.au/nfl/story/_/id/ ... pick-trade

In substance, the Saints have paid a premium to bring forward 1 first-round pick from 2023 into the upcoming 2022 draft. That makes sense for the Saints because they didn't have much cap room to engage in big free agency plays, whereas they can add extra talent at relatively modest salary cap cost through this draft move. On the other side of the deal, the Eagles have given themselves another 12 months to work out whether Jalen Hurts is their QB of the future, or whether they should draft a QB to replace him.
