Collingwood coach Craig McRae is thrilled with the Magpies’ potential signing of Category B rookie Alex Condon.
Condon, a 212cm basketball talent, has nominated the Magpies as the AFL club he will sign with … if he doesn’t make it to the NBA.

Good start him on the bench, then ease him into the contest gently...LaurieHolden wrote:McRae says the Magpies will give Condon his first taste of what an AFL career could look like as he heads to Melbourne to be a part of the club’s Anzac Day clash with Essendon.
“He’s a Category B rookie so you can sign them outside of the salary cap,” McRae said.

Anyone sufficiently across the Southeastern Conference / NBA draft? (2024 draft in June) When do players start to know if they are going to be selected?
Given our MSD is May, will it be this time next year before we know if Condon might be eligible to join our list?

This is all I could find from a poster called the 3rdMan on another site:LaurieHolden wrote:Anyone sufficiently across the Southeastern Conference / NBA draft? (2024 draft in June) When do players start to know if they are going to be selected?

"Florida's season starts Nov 2 and ends in March. NBA draft is then late June.
Condon will be a freshman for the 2024 NBA draft.
Florida NBA draft stats
3 players drafted in last 10 years
2 Freshmen ever: Bradley Beal (2012), Mike Miller (2000)
Overall NBA draft stats 2023
58 players drafted in 2 rounds
15 freshmen in 1st round
5 freshmen in 2nd round
From the above I think it's clear to see that unless Condon outperforms expectations to an extreme degree it's almost certain he doesn't get picked after 1 year of college. Right now he's on no one's radar and not a highly rated prospect.
The question will then be whether he shows some promise and will want to give it another year or two to try and build some interest.
Simply being tall is not going to get him picked. There are star college players that miss out on the NBA every year, many of them 6'10 or taller. An example from last year's draft, 6'10 Drew Timme who averaged 21 points (4th year) and made the All American first team (top 5 players in college), was not drafted (recently did sign with a team). 7'4 Zach Edey National Player of the Year (3rd season) pulled out of the draft as he was ranked to go late. Players need a very specific set of attributes to be selected at all or especially early."
Reckon from that we'll get him but when would be the question? He's my Salmon full forward, take the league by storm and be unstoppable.

So given our 2024 MSD is May it'd be a stretch, but still might be a chance to get him into our program later in the year to prepare him for the 2025 season.
His d.o.b is July 25, 2004, so he'd be still 21 going into the 2025 season.
Given his age, the respective drafts timing and his location, the timeline might just work out for a 2025 start.

there are lots of other comps in the world that can pay some big money. The beauty here for us is that the money is outside of the salary cap, and we do have money, so we can match what he might get in the Euro leagues - even it is far too much that what a Cat B should be getting in comparison to other players
