Long live the running bounce of the ball
One thing I love to watch is a player running flat biscuit down the MCG wing or bursting out of the guts and having a bounce or two.
A player that can do this not only breaks lines and links up play, but it's critical in confusing defences, rather than letting them set up by plodding, kick long football.
Most recently Bobby Hill has shown he has this innate skill, some of his dashes and baulking have been a joy to watch.
Pendles, Buckley, Heath Shaw and Mighty Mick McGuane are others that come to mind as great exponents of the running bounce.
Here's a trip down memory lane :

Buckley (bonus driving Camporeale into the ground after his dog act on Brodie Holland, a nice comment from Gary Lyon) ~

Yes, great to watch…. Awesome sight watching Bobby go however maybe someone should remind him you only have to bounce it at least once every 15 metre! not after taking every two or three steps (unless you’re Mason of course)
The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men...

2023 AFL League Bounces Per Game Leaders (Minimum 3 Games)
Interesting reading, Melbourne clearly did their home work on our ball carriers.
Flu or Covid aside, our ball movement was restricted by the way Melbourne addressed this and set their defence up. Was Fly outcoached? We didn't appear to have a plan B on this front.
That's where an enquiry has merit into out of contract players the ilk of Parish (Ess), Redman (Ess), Newman (Carl) or similar type in order to give us some additional experience >100 games and class on the meters gained front.
We've got the cap space to pursue one of these, looking forward to see what unfolds on this front.
Bounces
Rank 8 Nick Daicos Last Round 0 v Melbourne, Round 13 Average 1.38
Rank 13 Bobby Hill Last round 0 v Melbourne, Round 13 Average 1.23
Rank 35 Darcy Moore Last Round 3 v Melbourne, Round 13 Average0.69
Meters gained 2023
Rank 7 Nick Daicos 315 v Melbourne, Round 13 Average 513.69
Rank 26 John Noble 455 v Melbourne, Round 13 Average 461.77
Rank 59 Josh Daicos 326 v Melbourne, Round 13 Average 401.62
Rank 69 JDG 401 v West Coast, Round 12 Average 383.55
Rank 81 B. Maynard 569 v Melbourne, Round 13 Average 370.62

He was absolutely brilliant on a wing. However I remember an unsung player who was my best ever when bouncing the ball while running. That was David Twomey who played in the early 70’s. I recall Kevin Sheedy saying that he couldn’t believe it when he saw Twomey’s speed, balance, poise and control while bouncing the ball perfectly. I haven’t seen a better performer.VicParkTragic wrote:What about Ricky Bahram ?? I have memories of him speeding down the wing at Vic Park in the 70’s.
I term the current Collingwood attack based strategy “Unceasing Waves” like on a stormy and windy day with rough seas. A Perfect Storm
