I'm not sure about fitting player with brain springs but Google Phil Narkle, he played in something that looked like a motorcycle helmet. I'm sure it can be done, potentially the NFL could lead the way with all the lawsuits they're getting, replacing the hard shelled helmets with a soft, springy, shock absorbing foam that drastically reduces the impact of a hit. mcCartin retired after his last concussion which wasn't even a hit, just his head hit the ground in a contest. There has to be a way.

Not sure if this has been said, but given that Murphy is meeting with the AFL around the concussions, why isn't the Bryashaw of Melbourne doing the same given the outcry of his concussions.
Would be interesting if Murphy was directed to retire and Bryashaw was not...

This is an excellent point based on the player getting injured in the workplace. Murphy was a late second round or early third round pick I think. Would the AFL secret compensation recipe match his original draft position or add a nominal draft pick?
Either way I'm sure if the club requested it the AFL will reject it for equalisation reasons, send us to the last draft spot, PSD, RD, SSP or MSD and then introduce the rule in the next CBA to the advantage of another team.
Derek Hine wanted him so much that he has said that if Jayden Stephenson wasn't available at pick 6, he was going to pick Murphy.
Any updates on his playing future?
There was some talk of potential retirement with repeated concussions.
I assume with Kelly being delisted; Murphy will play on.
^ The AFL are still undergoing testing / review, the outcome still undermined. First hand from the family, while he's currently fine and not suffering any symptoms, they are unsure of the outcome of that formal process.

The issue is the brain sloshing around inside the skull from the impact. Nothing can stop that.
Padding can decrease skin an fracture damage but nothing else.

Makdissi, the former Hawthorn Football Club doctor, said the AFL had engaged a biomechanist in 2019 to help design a purpose-built standard helmet with correct designs and materials for Australian rules football, for the sport had typically turned to rugby union for guidance.
“More recently there have been helmets produced that seem to fit that [AFL] standard,” Makdissi said when questioned by Gideon Boas, the counsel assisting the coroner.
He said a standard AFL helmet could be introduced as early as 2024.
“There may be deployment that is suitable either next season or the season after. It’s close,” Makdissi said.

Because the league is between a rock and a hard place and they must be seen to doing something.
Look AFAIK a concussion is caused by the rapid acceleration or deceleration of the brain within the skull.
Helmets protect [the skull] but do nothing to stop impacts causing the brain to slosh around.
Helmet do work, they have them for motorcycles, pushbikes, scooters etc, they absorb some of the impact, yes the brain can move as well but studies have shown they lessen impact

So you are actually saying (and believing) that the simple wearing of a helmet can stop someone's head being violently moved by a heavy impact????

Because it is the violent movement of the head which causes the brain injury.
Don't take my word for it go to some doctor NOT involved with sporting politics and ask them.
Violent head movements can cause concussion.
Helmets do not prevent violent head movements from heavy impacts.
