The media were also a bit “ mischievous “ to say Markov was delisted. He was simply moved on to the rookie list. His contract still applies and he can play seniors anytime his form warrants it.
Ditto Johnson.
From the Pies web site
"In other contract news, Ash Johnson and Oleg Markov have been delisted with a commitment from the Club to be selected through the AFL Rookie Draft in November."

Very confusing. he is contracted. He could/should? have been moved straight to the Rookie list, yet has been sent into the draft with a promise to Rookie him.

Perhaps they have been told they won't get a game, by agreeing to this , they have a chance to put their toe in the draft.

^^^
I’m only guessing here but it might be because they had to make room for the draftees and Tim Membrey who would all be announced as primary listed players before the rookie draft. Because the ND occurs before the rookie draft, maybe they had to put Markov and Johnson to one side but still with the guarantee of being selected a day later in the rookie draft. Dunno.

Will be gutted if we lost Markov despite the intention to re-rookie him.

But yeah, like many others, I'm a bit confused with the situation. Some are saying they automatically go on the rookie list, others are saying they have to actually be drafted by Collingwood in the RD, and also that other clubs can take Oleg/Ash if they have a pick before us.

Should have read more. Looks like they will stay on the list.

COLLINGWOOD has committed to selecting premiership player Oleg Markov in next month's Telstra AFL Rookie Draft after the 28-year-old was delisted on Tuesday.

Markov and key forward Ash Johnson have both dropped off the club's senior list, but the Magpies say they will re-list the pair in the rookie draft on November 22.

Seems this is purely a financial decision. I suspect our club would be content if both Oleg and Ash were drafted by other clubs, taking their salaries off our books. Nevertheless, as a show of good faith and to maintain team spirit, they have been advised that we will rookie them if no-one else recruits them. I'm happy with this outcome, as I can't really see either of them getting any senior games with us next year, unless we have a shit load of injuries.

Its a bit tough on Oleg. He's got something none of our hot-shot new recruits have.

A Collingwood premiership medal.

Well our first pick is what, a spot or two ahead of theirs? Unlikely, but see what unfolds...

So presuming we will take Oleg first, that is unless another clubs snaffles him first, but you'd presume we can eliminate Richmond or GCS from that scenario, there is a chance AJ might get "poached" prior to our second pick.
But who knows what clubs are scheming; as other posters have pointed out, these clubs own recent delistings might be cap "rebate" related, and play the system in the same way were apparently are?

I think that would be unlikely since he doesn't fit their game style.

We have picked up Perryman/Houston who can play back and Membrey who plays forward.

The club would be rapt OMO if AJ and/or Markov got drafted elsewhere.

No offence to the players, as much as we could have them for depth , there is depth already, and their space may be better served by the next guy.

Carlton "game style": kick it to Curnow, failing that, kick it to McKay.
Failing that, kick it to TDK, failing that, let Cripps fix it...

I think we’re missing a trick here regarding the clubs commitment to both Markov and Johnson. Both the player and club have committed to each other and that’s how it will play out. Carlton may well be desperate for Markov but they won’t get him because they would first go to him and say “ we want you ! “ but Markov will simply say “ thanks but I’m already committed to Collingwood “ The moment he utters those words, it’s of no benefit for Carlton to select a player who has already acknowledged he has committed elsewhere.
I’ve never heard of an example yet where any delisted player who has been promised a spot on the rookie list ( and that happens a lot ) has been picked up by another club in the rookie draft. It won’t be happening with Markov or Johnson either ( unless BOTH parties were to have a change of heart leading up to the draft )
