I read Gavin Brown's autobiography a while ago and he said that the media perception of his physical conditioning was greatly exaggerated.
He said there was that one year where he had one annoying niggle after the other (98, I'm pretty sure it was) - but that's all they were were. "Niggles." The media, however, blew his condition out of proportion. He was fine and his body wasn't on the verge of collapse, as was printed in the media.
Brown himself claimed he felt physically able to play several more years yet. With when that book was dated, I think he said he could play up to 2002, barring major injury.
