Players who don't get selected

Post by Magpie-Pep »

What happens to the players who don't get selected to play each week and are Collingwod Listed plaers.

Last year Willi had a reserves side and the Collingwood listed players used to play for that team or in some cases, Billy Morrison (what a crap pick that was), was the willy reserves best player.
Are we ready for another tilt...

The players not selected play with a number of different clubs including east Burwood and Xaviers. Of the 20 VFL player squad, only 6 (one of whom was Licca) played VFL. The other 16 players were from Collingwood's AFL list.

Yeah I know we all want the VFL to be successful and to win so therefore play the AFL before the VFL Primary listed players. The primary listed players if not picked to play return to their local clubs, are not given the opportunity to gel as a weekly side so when they do get picked they are the odd player out of a sort of set team, so therefore dont get much of the play, which may in turn blow their confidence. Unlike the AFL listed players who get a hefty player payment, many rely on their day job to survive and unless they have a boss that allows them the time to train all things become difficult. Add together not getting a regular VFL game, putting in lots of time training, sometimes lots of travelling also, weigh it against local football that at some clubs pays very well. How long will these guys stay keen. If Collingwood is genuine and wants to hold these players they should have a VFL reserves team so the unpicked players still feel part of the Collingwood Club.
that's the thing I love about football :-)

All good points mate. I guess as this is our first year with a VFL side perhaps we'll see it expanded to include reserves next year.

This year is a learning curve. If the player is listed with a club that is where he goes. Walsh is listed with Balwyn. Whether he plays there will depend on form and games. Come a bye he may get a run. Brad Jones is playing at East Burwood and is close for selection. As long as they go back to a competition that plays competative football that is all that matters. We are talking fringe players here. Mind you I would not like them heading back to paddock football somewhere.

The club knows what its doing.

I think that the question was, say we have a clean bill of health, we have 20 Collingwood players to be selected from, what happens to those who aren't selected? Cos we can still only play a certain number of listed players? or has that gone out the window...

They should all have nominated clubs, if they do not have one a club is reccomended based on their location travelling etc.
