"Hashmatullah Shahidi has become the first Afghanistan player to post a Test match double hundred while his team smashed batting records on a memorable day two of their second and final match against Zimbabwe in Abu Dhabi.

Playing their sixth Test match, the Afghans racked up 4-545, their highest total ever on Thursday, before captain Asghar Afghan declared their first innings."

Wow. I'm reaching for the records to find out the last time a Test was won by an innings with a follow on.

Disappointingly, I can't find any list of margin of victory by a team after that team enforced the follow on. Plenty of records asserting that Australia is the only team ever to lose a Test after enforcing the follow on (3 times).

... but after a bit more research, I am certain that the Afghanis are out of the running - the record looks to be victory by an innings and 579 runs.

20th August, 1938

Kennington Oval, London

England won toss and batted. 7/903 (dec) (Hutton 364, Hammond 187 and Hardstaff 169*), Australia 201 and 123. I'm not sure whether it's apt to refer to a team that declares for 903 as suffering a "mini-collapse" in the middle order - but England did lose 3 for 9 after reaching 2 for 546, so I suppose it could have been worse (in a limited and very particular sense of "worse").

I'm thinking the follow on enforcement deficit (702 runs behind after the first innings) is probably also at the top of the list.

And as a second edit - I just finished this hugely enjoyable read, full of colour and anecdote, about that game: https://www.cricketcountry.com/articles ... oval-30264
