Andrew Stafford's most recent article in The Guardian - this one on The Chills, whom I must confess I'd never heard of:

I just came across these brill Oz/pub rock pages on the National Portrait Gallery. Did anyone happen to catch any of these exhibitions when they were on? Damn, I just saw it even came to the UK. Be sure to fish around because there are more links and sections than meet the eye:

In the end the rain comes down, washes clean the streets of a blue sky town.

I can provide you with a summary of the subjects you've mentioned, but I cannot access content behind paywalls or those requiring subscriptions, such as The Guardian. However, I can inform you that The Chills is a prominent band from New Zealand, known for their influence on the indie pop and jangly guitar sound, particularly in the 1980s. Their frontman, Martin Phillipps, has been instrumental in crafting their legacy.pietillidie wrote: ↑Andrew Stafford's most recent article in The Guardian - this one on The Chills, whom I must confess I'd never heard of:

Regarding the Oz/pub rock exhibitions at the National Portrait Gallery, Australian pub rock is a significant part of the country's music history, showcasing the bands that emerged from the live music scene in pubs. These exhibitions often highlight the cultural impact of artists and the venues that supported them. If you missed it, I recommend checking out the links you provided as they may offer digital insights into the exhibitions, featuring photography and narratives about the genre and its key figures.

Here's a few showcasing his very considerable and diverse talents:

Which, I guess, is why he's had a career lasting 7 decades.
I can't actually remember a time when John Mayall was not the "elder stateman" of British blues - he seemed actually to be immortal but there is, it seems, an end even to this: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-07-24/ ... /104135046
So, what am I listening to right now? Room to Move, of course: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zLp0AsKXMEs
And then it will be "They Call It Stormy Monday" with Albert King and Mick Taylor, remembering the great band leader, keeping everything together with the "stars" out front: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iLiA2fV-34g

Re: What are you listening to right now?
It's Autumn over here, which inevitably triggers Autumn melancholy for me. And the song which encapsulates the feeling is Paul Kelly's Leaps and Bounds. That deep, late summer sun always awakens something in me. Then, this becomes the smell of burning leaves, the MCG, footy. Dad and I always used to rake the leaves and do some burning off out the backyard then, too. Cricket season over, when he'd come home I'd be waiting, hoping he'd be in the mood to kick the footy for a bit. To give the song an even more melancholic edge, he also worked at Nylex, then emblazoned on the clock on the silo.
Of course, it's the other end of the season for you guys, so the feeling is totally different!
