I think we've all been scarred by David Schwartz who from memory came back about 8 months from his first ACL only to do it again...
That was back in 1993 IIRC, so not sure if sports science has advanced significantly since then, in relation to ligament damage/reconstruction.

However, Tom Doedee reconstructed knee gave way at training some weeks back in Brisbane, when I believe he was cleared to return prior to that 12-month recovery period.

And sure, it's not a perfect science by any stretch, but that 12-month rehab period seems to be a solid rule-of-thumb to mitigate that probability of a re-occurance by returning too early?
Brown26 wrote: McStay lucky enough to have a knee that will allow a 8 or 9 month recovery? I'm not sure, but if anyone deserves a bit of luck he does given that he basically got us to the granny only to not be able to play in it!

Yep, thanks to Elliott's stupidity in the PF; that almost killed our premiership hopes before we took to the field.

In 2012 Derrick Rose and Iman Shumpert tore ACL’s in the same knee on the same day.

8 months later Shumpert returned to play, while Rose sat that entire following season before finally suiting up 18 months after the initial injury.

Rose made it 10 games before he was again out for the remainder of the 2013-14 season, while Shumpert played 74 of a possible 82 games.

Ricky Rubio also tore his ACL a couple months prior in March 2012, returning to play in December the same year (9 months) largely without issue, until another ACL in 2021.

My point is that having a hard and fast “12 months” means little. Doedee’s misfortune is unrelated. Take Scharenberg as another example.. tears another ACL within 9 months at training, has a long break, then does another ACL a year later.

Some body’s are just more susceptible I suppose.

Round 8 Injury Update

Post by LaurieHolden »

Collingwood’s Head of High-Performance Jarrod Wade has provided an injury update ahead of the Magpies’ Round Eight blockbuster against Carlton.

Midfielder Jordan De Goey will be assessed before Friday night’s clash, after pulling up from sore from the Magpies’ ANZAC Day draw. The 28-year-old has experienced groin pain, which saw him miss training on Monday afternoon. De Goey will be given every opportunity across the week to recover and will hopefully complete training in the coming days before being assessed ahead of Friday night.

An on-going foot issue means that midfielder Tom Mitchell will also be assessed ahead of Friday night’s clash. The ongoing plantar fasciitis issue has been managed well across the past nine to 10 weeks, but due to the short turnaround before Thursday’s draw, the midfielder has pulled up sorer than anticipated. The 30-year-old also missed training today, with a further assessment to be made in coming days.

Nathan Kreuger will play his first game of the season on Saturday in the VFL, after overcoming a hamstring and then calf injury. The tall will line up against Southport at Fankhauser Reserve in Queensland when the Pies take on the standalone side at 12:05pm on Saturday.

Defender Josh Eyre remains in a holding pattern as he continues to recover from the hamstring injury he suffered during pre-season. The 21-year-old is running at 85 to 95 percent speed and will have another week of training at that level. The defender is still at least two weeks away from full team training but is completing non-contact drills.

Ruck Oscar Steene has undergone successful surgery on his toe tendon injury, and will spend at least four weeks in a moonboot, before resuming his rehabilitation.

After experiencing a down-load over the past 10 days, while still maintaining lighter running duties, Dan McStay will progress into the next stage of rehabilitation from his ACL injury. The key forward is doing high level functional work including spinning and jumping, while maintaining non-contact football training. Currently at the five-month post-injury mark, contact training will be introduced to his training plan once he reaches the six-month mark.

Collingwood midfielder (Mitchell) hit with fresh setback

Collingwood midfielder Tom Mitchell could be facing further time on the sidelines after dealing with appendicitis over the weekend. An appendicitis could limit players from physical activity for close to two weeks, placing Mitchell in further doubt for the Magpies' upcoming games against West Coast and Adelaide.

Round Nine Injury Update

Post by LaurieHolden »

Collingwood’s Head of High-Performance Jarrod Wade has provided an Injury Update ahead of Sunday’s Round Nine game against the West Coast Eagles at Marvel Stadium.

Collingwood’s equal-leading goal kicker for season 2024, Brody Mihocek, will miss two to three weeks after scans revealed a minor, grade one strain to his hamstring. The forward was able to play out the rest of Friday’s win after sustaining the injury early in the last quarter, but his movement was limited.

Beau McCreery is working through the twelve step concussion protocols after suffering a head knock in Friday’s win. A further update will be provided next week on the progress of his recovery.

Young defender Tew Jiath picked up an ankle injury in Collingwood’s VFL defeat to Southport on Saturday. The 2023 draftee was able to complete the game, but was sorer than expected in recovery. Scans have revealed a minor grade syndesmosis and Jiath will be in a moonboot for the rest of the week and it’s expected he will miss two to three games.

Jordan De Goey has been ruled out of Sunday’s clash with West Coast with the groin issue that also kept him out of last week’s win. It’s expected the midfielder will begin running towards the back end of next week and the Magpies’ Medical team are confident he will be available for Round 10.

Midfielder Tom Mitchell was expected to return this week after missing last week’s game with a foot injury, but a case of appendicitis has hospitalised the 30-year-old and he will subsequently miss Sunday’s clash against West Coast. Once Mitchell receives the all-clear from the specialist he has been seeing for the appendicitis, he will commence a running program. Once the midfielder increases his running loads, he should be available for next week’s Round 10 clash.

Josh Eyre is progressing well in his return from a hamstring injury but has been in a holding pattern in terms across the last couple of weeks in terms of progressing past 85 to 90 percent running speed, which isn’t uncommon when it comes to long-term hamstring injuries like his. Over the next couple of weeks, the defender is expected to progress his running speed should he meet some gym markers, before returning to full training in about two weeks’ time and playing in three to four weeks.

Ruckman Oscar Steene is now walking comfortably in a moon boot and has started some light rehab activities, including a strength program, following his successful toe ligament surgery. Steene will be in the moonboot for another three weeks, before being able to prepare his running.

Key forward Dan McStay is only a couple of weeks away from reaching the six-month milestone post ACL surgery. At that point in time, the 28-year-old will have some further reviews of his progress. He is currently in a holding pattern when it comes to his running, speed and agility loads, but ticking every box so far. After the six-month mark, he will progress to the next stage of his rehabilitation which includes contact training.
