Frankston Dolphins VFL licence terminated

Sorry, Dave...
Terrible shame for the Dollies. Already in heavy debt and administration. If they survive, which they're apparently confident of doing, I guess they apply to re-join the Mornington Peninsula league.
Removes one of my favourite road trips in VFL footy, which is a further shame.
14 team comp again now, so the possibility of teams only having 2 byes instead of 3 is a possibility again. Just unfortunate it comes out of Frankston's misfortune....

I really wish they would separate the competition in two. One comp called the VFL which is composed completely of AFL seconds. This should include the club currently called the Northern Blues which should be called Carlton and play at Princes Park. Melbourne can continue to call their seconds Casey but the Saints should give Sandringham back to the original Zebras fans and Hawthorn should establish their own seconds and return the Mustangs to the people of Box Hill.
The second competition should reclaim the VFA name. It should include all the current former VFA clubs in the current VFL but it should also attempt to revive some of the VFA clubs that collapsed in the last thirty years. Not just Frankston and Preston but perhaps Oakliegh, Prahran, Dandenong and Moorabbin as well. The way to make this viable is to concede that it would be a third tier competition with much lower salaries than the existing VFL.

North Ballarat could leave VFL, with its board set to vote on its future on Monday night. Some directors want to focus on club's local team

Clubs to leave since 2000:
Frankston 2016.
Bendigo 2014.
Gold Coast 2010.
Tasmania 2008.
Carlton reserves 2002.
Murray 2002.
St Kilda reserves 2000.
Clubs that left in the 90s:
Traralgon 1997.
Dandenong 1994.
Prahran 1994.
Oakleigh 1994.
Camberwell 1991.
Brunswick 1991.
This doesn't take into account that some teams have also merged/relocated, ie; Springvale, Preston, etc.
We now have 5 AFL reserves teams playing in the comp, with 2 others rebranded to suit their AFL affiliate.
I think when/if the AFL-VFL partnership ceases, then we might see a few of these teams return. But of course, many of these locations now have a team in the TAC Cup competition.
We have a serious problem here and that is that the VFL is dying.

Is there anyway to fix this?
What if all Victorian AFL clubs have a VFL Reserves team and play in the "VFL".
This would mean a competition of ten clubs. Western Bulldogs can play under the name Footscray and everyone would play at their traditional home grounds, with occasional matched played as curtain raisers at the MCG/Eithad/Kardinia Park.
The non-Victorian AFL clubs would continue to field stand alone teams in the WAFL/SANFL/NEAFL.
I would suggest that the Swans and Lions could enter this "VFL" competition as Fitzroy and South Melbourne, but the costs and organisations of flights would become too much of a mess. Basically, you cant have teams operating out of Qld/NSW and playing reserves matches in Vic.
I love having the cake and being able to keep it too. By that I mean I love having a Pies VFL team that is able to play teams like Port Melb, Williamstown, etc. But the reality is that with so many reserves teams in the comp, and with so many teams folding or being rebranded, I think its time we tried to straighten it all out. And fairly.
The question then becomes, what of the current (non AFL) VFL teams. The VFA would be recreated and hopefully we'd see the return of some of the missing clubs with the Bullants and Mustangs "doing a Coburg" and bringing back their rightful name.
Perhaps some of the stronger suburban clubs like Noble Park, Vermont, West Preston Lakeside, etc, could be considered to enter the new VFA? Just an idea.
Of course the other question would be, can these teams/competition afford to run on their own? Can we turn this into a financially successful competition. The last thing we'd want is to see more clubs folding.
After the AFL, can we have the TAC Cup, a VFL reserves, a VFA competition and all the suburban leagues running successfully?

Can concrete float?John Wren wrote:a national reserves comp (where every afl side has a team) has been floated but nothing more concrete than that. if that was to ever eventuate it may kill off the vfl or give it impetus to return to the old vfa.

And now the Scorpions name is dead.
We've really killed off the VFA haven't we?
Another stupid idea gone through. I've loved being able to play Willy and Port as a VFL team, but I think it's time we bring back the VFA and let the AFL have a reserves competition.http://www.afl.com.au/news/2016-12-19/casey-demons-locked-in-as-melbourne-vfl-affiliate
MELBOURNE'S VFL affiliate will be renamed the Casey Demons in 2017, the clubs further strengthening what was a once rocky alignment.
