Indian Premier League

Post by Pies4shaw »

It’s due to start (after the COVID-19 deferral) on 15 April. I don’t suggest we get our hopes up that there will be anything to watch then but, for now, there’s plenty of coverage of the players trying to keep occupied during lockdown. There’s even a video from Shreyas Iyer which demonstrates that the long tradition of poor Indian fielding extends to the canine population, too. Kane Williamson isn’t going to swap Sandy for Betty any time soon.

We’re underway in Dubai.

The Australian Middle Order, captain of the Rajasthan Royals, decided to open the batting (Butler joins the team in a couple of days) and put Chennai (last year’s runners up in a thrilling final) to the sword. Bradsmith made 69 from 47 (4 4s and 4 6s) to position the Royals for an onslaught. They finished with 216 and won comfortably.

It's a pity Flat Track Bully Smith can't play decent T20 innings for Oz.

Latest media reports say it was a throw-down in the nets that exposed his defective technique and concussed him.

If you're not interested in the competition, you don't have to post about it.

Just an update - I see that the games are being played across the UAE, not just in Dubai. The Royals' game was actually in Sharjah.

Last night’s game was a fizzer. Kolkata was never in the hunt chasing Mumbai’s 195 (Rohit Sharna 80), losing by 49 runs. Cummins bowled 3 overs for 49 for Kolkata but made 33 from 12 with 4 sixes in the hopeless chase. Pattinson was one of the best for Mumbai, taking 2/25 from his 4 overs. Bumrah also bowled well for Mumbai, so if both stay fit, they look to have a very impressive bowling lineup. That was Patto’s 2nd game. He looked way off the mark in his first trundle, so perhaps Cummins will be better for the run, too.

Mitch Marsh is out of the tournament with injury.

Just what Oz needed... not.

Punjab pulverised Bangalore. Rahul was MOTM with his 126* in their 207. Maxy batted at 4 and made just a handful. Finch opens for Bangalore. He made 20 but they were never in the hunt. Kohli made 1 and ABDV made 30.

Kolkata won comfortably over Hyderabad. Cummins was much better, second game up, taking 1/19. Since Hyderabad depend very much upon what Warner and Bairstow do opening, and Cummins got Bairstow very early, he may have ruined a good game. Warner made 36 from 30 and Pandey 51 from 38 but 142 was never going to be enough. They didn't really show much urgency - they only lost 4 wickets (one a run out) in reaching that total. The Knight Riders ran down the total with two overs to spare, only 3 wickets down.

Next up, the Australian Middle Order will probably open again for the Royals when he takes on the Australian One Day Batting Line-up (who plays fo Punjab) tonight. Likely teams:

Rajasthan Royals: 1 Steven Smith (capt), 2 Yashasvi Jaiswal, 3 Sanju Samson, 4 Jos Buttler (wk), 5 Robin Uthappa, 6 Riyan Parag, 7 Shreyas Gopal, 8 Jodra Archer, 9 Tom Curran, 10 Rahul Tewatia, 11 Jaydev Unadkat

Kings XI Punjab: 1 KL Rahul, 2 Chris Gayle, 3 Mayank Agarwal, 4 Karun Nair, 5 Glenn Maxwell, 6 Sarfaraz Khan, 7 Jimmy Neesham/Mujeeb Ur Rahman, 8 Ravi Bishnoi, 9 Mohammed Shami, 10 Sheldon Cottrell, 11 M Ashwin

So, the Australian Middle Order opened for Rajasthan again. Punjab had put on 2/223, on the back of a 183 opening stand. Maxy came in and made 14 from 9. But, then, Bradsmith pulverised the Punjab attack and got his team off to a flyer. They made the total with 3 balls to spare.

Thanks, Pies4. :D

I've never had much interest in the IPL, till this season. Plenty of Aussies playing - Smith, Warner, Finch, Maxy, Cummins, Haz, Stoinis, M Marsh (till injured).

Haven't sighted Wade, yet. Is he over there. mate ?

It's a game. Enjoy it. :D

Haven't seen him. I'll try to find out if he's in a squad. There's a limit on the number of overseas players who can be in the lineup, so it's hard to get a gig if you aren't a real star.

By the way, Watson is still there, opening for CSK and Pattinson is bowling for Mumbai, too.

Aha, Yes, I did see Watto, at first slip, chatting to his (Chennai Super Kings) skipper, MS Dhoni.

And Patto. Mumbai Indians ?

Who's this new opener, K ? One S Smith. Looks ok. :D

------------------------------

Smith slots back into top gear in a brand new role

Steven Smith's concussion that he suffered before the one-day series against England was a bit more severe than appeared the case and he arrived in the UAE with some doubt still surrounding his health.

However, he passed the required protocols and showed no ill-effects as he made 69 off 47 balls opening for Rajasthan Royals in their high-scoring victory over Chennai Super Kings. Notably, it was the first time in his entire career across all formats that Smith had opened the batting and he carried that into the second match against Kings XI Punjab where his 50 off 27 balls laid the foundation for a record IPL chase by the Royals.

Stoinis stars

Cricinfo: "It's fair to say Marcus Stoinis started the IPL with a bang, although he also provided a reminder that it's so often not the good deliveries that take wickets in T20. First of all he rescued Delhi Capitals' innings from 96 for 6 as he plundered 53 off 21 balls, batting in a middle-order role that is not viewed as his ideal T20 position, which included 30 off the final over.

Then after Ashwin had dislocated his shoulder he was called onto bowl more than may have been expected and was ultimately required to defend 13 off the last over. A six from Mayank Agarwal appeared to have sealed the game with the Kings XI needing 1 off 3 balls, yet somehow a dot was followed by two wickets off full tosses to earn the tie-breaker which the Capitals won comfortably"
