The Melbourne Renegades have confirmed the return of firebrand quick James Pattinson on a long-term deal after two seasons with the Brisbane Heat.

Pattinson is currently enjoying a break-out season in the Indian Premier League with the Mumbai Indians where he has nine wickets from seven games having been a late call-up to replace Sri Lanka's Lasith Malinga.

Mumbai Indians fast bowler Lasith Malinga, the highest wicket-taker in the IPL, has pulled out of the 2020 season in the UAE, citing personal reasons. Australia fast bowler James Pattinson, who is yet to play an IPL game, has been named as his replacement.

It is understood Malinga's father has been ill and may require surgery in the coming weeks. Since Malinga wanted to be with his father at home in Sri Lanka, he opted against travelling with the Mumbai squad to Abu Dhabi last month. It was believed that he would link up with the side during the business end of the league, but now Malinga has pulled out of the entire tournament, which will run from September 19 to November 10.

"Lasith is a legend and a pillar of MI's strength," Mumbai owner Akash Ambani was quoted as saying by the franchise's website. "There is no denying the fact that we will miss Lasith's cricketing acumen this season. However, we fully understand Lasith's need to be in Sri Lanka with his family during this time."

Ambani also welcomed Pattinson into the set-up, saying he was the "right fit" for them. While Mumbai have Jasprit Bumrah and New Zealand's Trent Boult to lead the pace attack, they could still miss Malinga's vast experience. He is the second-highest wicket-taker in T20 cricket, behind Dwayne Bravo, and has regularly delivered at the crunch for Mumbai.

"BBL captains and coaches are set to become more accountable for their decisions with the introduction of three new rules for the 10th edition of the tournament, with the league's consultant Trent Woodhill insisting the innovations will "blow up" what he considers the regular patterns of a T20 contest.

All three rules are designed to maximise interest throughout the full 40 overs of a contest and ensure strategic thinking is rewarded"

"The 'Power Surge' is a two-over period during which the fielding team is allowed only two players outside the inner fielding circle. The batting side can call for this at any point from the 11th over of their innings. The fielding restrictions replicate those of the usual Powerplay at the beginning of an innings, which has been shortened to four overs.

An 'X-factor Player', named as either the 12th or 13th player on the team sheet, can come into the game beyond the 10th over of the first innings and replace any player who is yet to bat, or has bowled no more than one over.

And the 'Bash Boost' will be a bonus point awarded halfway through the second innings. The team chasing will receive the bonus point if they're above the equivalent 10-over score of their opposition, while if they're trailing, the fielding side will receive the point. Teams will also now be awarded three points for winning the match, as opposed to the traditional two.
