Which Smith was that Donny - the one who can't play ODIs, the one who can't play T20s or the one who can't play Tests?

Vics are 7/228. They need 91 from 54 balls. Pattinson is still there on 45 from 30 but Matthew Short (67 at a run a ball) is gone, so they have it all to do from here.

Yep NSW to good. Was a great total for NSW too looked like they were only going to get 200 runs but blazed away and got it to 318 great batting in the middle lower order and backed it all up with the bowling kept it tight and fielded well.

The Vics run chase just could not get going and a slow start always behind on the run rate.

Nice game i feel theres another game at North Sydney today or tomorrow.

If I were a fan of Smith, I'd be happier if he'd failed. Then it'd be easier to explain away this summer. I could just claim he was in bad form.

But now, to explain it away, I'd have to claim that he's been bouncing around many times and very frequently between top form and bottom form. I suppose it's possible for that to happen, but can you name any examples? It's a short summer. A batsman might have a form slump and come through it. But not up and down and up and down like a yo yo.

The more realistic explanation is not the magical yo yo explanation. The more realistic explanation is that Smith is a Flat-Track Bully -- and Down-Hill Skier.

He had a poor IPL. Then, when there were meaningless ODIs on the usual very flat ODI pitches, with no preparation, no crowds, nothing, he was able to slog runs.

When it really mattered, in a Test series, with a teeny weeny bit of help for bowlers in Adelaide, he failed miserably. He made 1 off 29 balls, including being given a life.

In Melbourne, it was very flat, but at least India still had something mixing 1st XI and 2nd XI bowling. Smith failed miserably.

Against India's 3rd XI on extremely flat tracks, Smith was able to FTB a bit (but not enough -- remember Slater criticised Marnus for not scoring at least 150).

So it's not form bouncing up and down and up and down and up and down... That doesn't happen. It's just when the pitch is extremely flat, and the bowlers are the 3rd XI, and when it doesn't matter (DHS in meaningless one-day matches) that Smith can FTB. On pitches a little less dead, when at least half of the 1st XI bowlers are playing, and the result matters, Smith fails.

So the profile of Smith's innings this summer is just what you'd expect from an FTB.

Re. ODIs: Smith's ODI record is much worse than Joe Root's. That's a clear fact. I showed it in another thread*. It's interesting because it feels like half of England have wanted Root dropped from their ODI side for years.
